In 2025, The Next Step workshop, an initiative for talent development by Cannes Critics’ Week, is broadening its horizons with fresh international collaborations. This program, which guides short film directors from Critics’ Week towards their first feature films, has entered into a partnership with Projeto Paradiso from Brazil. As part of this agreement, a Brazilian filmmaker will be included in the upcoming group. The foundation, supported by the Olga Rabinovich Institute, aims to amplify the influence of Brazilian filmmakers within this esteemed development workshop.
In the meantime, the Next Step II program, which brings together six filmmakers and three composers during its fall session, is moving to Fabbrica Culturale Casell’arte, a creative retreat located in Venaco, Corsica. The initiative persists with the backing of French industry giants SACEM and CNC.
After concluding its December 2024 workshop session at Moulin d’Andé and Paris, Next Step will bestow its prize upon the most promising first-time feature film project during a May ceremony.
Currently, the Polish filmmaker Dawid Bodzak is enjoying a two-week stay at Moulin d’Andé-CECI (Center for Cinematic Writings), where he’s working on his upcoming feature film titled “Episode.” During his residency, he’ll receive guidance from industry experts.
Eight movie creators took part in the latest Next Step workshop, which ran from December 8-13, 2024. During this time, they showcased their initial full-length film projects. For the third year running, the workshop collaborated with the Morelia Film Festival, inviting a Mexican filmmaker to join the group.
For one week, the program at Moulin d’Andé and Paris provided participants with valuable insights from global consultants on various aspects of screenplay creation, directing techniques, production logistics, and marketing tactics. Sessions backed by SACEM featured collaborations with composers, enabling filmmakers to delve into the musical elements for their projects. Additionally, SACD organized a networking day at Maison des Auteurs, linking participants with influential figures in the French film industry.
