Cannes Chief Thierry Fremaux Confirms Spike Lee’s ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ Premiere With Denzel Washington, Explains Why Film Wasn’t in Lineup Reveal: ‘Wanted to Be Cautious’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Without a doubt, Spike Lee’s “Highest 2 Lowest” is not just an imaginary notion. Rather, it has been officially verified that this film will make its debut outside the competition category at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, as confirmed by Thierry Fremaux to EbMaster.

On Instagram this Thursday morning, the renowned filmmaker shared the news, approximately an hour following the formal unveiling of the festival’s schedule. Notably, “Highest 2 Lowest” was absent from the announced lineup.

Lee’s adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime thriller “High and Low,” originally starring Denzel Washington, hasn’t been officially confirmed for the festival yet due to some late-breaking details we’re still waiting on. Specifically, I wanted to make sure that Denzel Washington himself will be attending the event. I just want to proceed with caution, ensuring all facts are accurate before making any announcements.

Fremaux announced that Spike Lee’s movie ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ will indeed be shown, and it’s notable because Denzel Washington, a first-timer, will walk the Cannes Film Festival’s red carpet for the very first time!

On May 19th, I’ll be part of a special occasion – this date holds significant significance as it was the same day that Spike Lee’s groundbreaking film “Do the Right Thing” made its world premiere at Cannes in 1989. As if that wasn’t enough, May 19th also marks what would have been the centennial birthday of Malcolm X, a figure whom Lee paid tribute to through his 1992 film “Malcolm X,” featuring the remarkable talent of Denzel Washington.

Fremaux shared that the Apple-A24 movie adheres to the narrative structure of Akira Kurosawa’s “High and Low.” In his words, “It’s the tale of a man at the pinnacle of his wealth; destiny presents him with a critical decision that could potentially upend everything.” He added that Tokyo has been replaced by New York, the 1960s have given way to the present, and Denzel Washington steps into the role previously played by Toshirō Mifune, doing so in his unique style. The film is also a powerful exploration of family dynamics.

In first and last place among the cast are Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, Ice Spice, and ASAP Rocky (as shown in the picture above).

Lee has been a familiar face at the Cannes Film Festival for quite some time now. In 2021, he held the position as the jury head and awarded Julia Ducournau the prestigious Palme d’Or for her film “Titane.” This year, Ducournau is returning to the festival with her new movie, “Alpha,” which will be competing in the main competition.

Apart from Apple, Bono’s “Stories of Surrender” will also be present at the festival. Meanwhile, A24 will compete with Ari Aster’s film “Eddington,” along with other movies on the roster.
