Cannes Bans Actor Theo Navarro-Mussy From ‘Dossier 137’ Premiere After Rape Allegations

Due to allegations of rape and sexual misconduct, Theo Navarro-Mussy, an actor in the movie “Dossier 137,” was prohibited from attending the film’s red carpet premiere at Cannes Film Festival on Thursday evening.

In the film “Dossier 137,” which is competing at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Navarro-Mussy plays a secondary character. The announcement of his exclusion from the red carpet events took place prior to the movie’s premiere on Thursday night at the festival’s Palais theater.

A spokesperson for Navarro-Mussy failed to provide a comment right away when asked by EbMaster.

The creators of “Dossier 137,” Caroline Benjo and Carole Scott, explained to EbMaster that the accusations against Navarro-Mussy stem from an incident that took place prior to the film’s production. Their company, Haut et Court, supported the political drama.

Despite the events mentioned primarily happening before the film’s release, we chose, in consultation with the festival organizers, that the individual connected to the film would not attend Cannes. This was done to show respect for the accusers and to uphold the testimonies of the victims, while still preserving the presumption of innocence for the accused. The Cannes Film Festival management has made it clear they will not feature individuals under suspicion of sexual misconduct or violence. For Haut et Court, such matters are important, and so our decision was natural, as was Dominik Moll’s stance on these issues.

As a movie critic, I find it unprecedented to report that an actor has been barred from the prestigious Cannes Film Festival due to serious sexual misconduct allegations. Earlier today, French magazine Telerama disclosed this decision, which was made by festival director Thierry Fremaux and the film’s production team prior to the festival’s opening on Tuesday. Consequently, the actor in question will not grace the red carpet.

In April, prior to the Cannes Festival, I was informed by Fermaux that they had introduced a fresh regulation for films in the official selection. This rule was put in place to ensure that the submitted films uphold and continue to uphold the safety, integrity, and dignity of all contributors, while also adhering to legal obligations.

As reported by Telerama, Navarro-Mussy is currently under accusation by three ex-partners for acts of sexual assault and physical violence, which are said to have occurred in 2018, 2019, and 2020 respectively.

Under the guidance of Dominik Moll, winner of a César Award, the film “Dossier 137” unfolds amidst France’s yellow vest protests. The narrative revolves around a young man who sustains an injury from a flash-ball projectile. In this story, Léa Drucker portrays Stephanie, an investigator tasked with identifying the individual responsible for the incident. Joining her in the cast are Jonathan Turnbull, Mathilde Roehrich, Guslagie Malanda, and Stanislas Merhar.
