As a supporter of body positivity and understanding the complexities of Hollywood, I find it disheartening to see how Candace Cameron Bure and Danielle Fishel’s experiences with weight-related storylines on their respective shows reflect a broader issue in the industry. Both women, who were young actresses at the time, had their personal lives and bodies used as plot devices, without proper consultation or consideration for their feelings.
More recently, Candace Cameron Bure discussed her past experiences with weight pressure during her time on “Full House” in an episode of the “Pod Meets World” rewatch podcast, which is a spin-off from the popular TV show “Boy Meets World.”
“Bure stated on the podcast that she was often referred to as having plump cheeks, which many found endearing. Reflecting on her past, she realizes she was simply an average girl. Yet, when people meet her in person, they’re frequently surprised by how much slimmer she appears compared to her image.”
She mentioned: “Indeed, at that teenage age, you often experience insecurities regardless if you’re on TV or not. However, they become amplified when you are, which made those years a tad more uncomfortable for me.”
In the fourth season of “Full House,” an episode titled “Shape Up” came to mind for Bure, where her character D.J. Tanner embarked on a quick diet for a week to shed pounds. The actor from “Full House” mentioned that they had previously discussed this storyline with her to make sure she was at ease with the concept.
“Initially, they consulted with my parents and myself about creating an episode similar to this, to which I agreed. However, as I got involved in the process, it felt a bit uncomfortable.” (Bure)
Later, she remembered the manner in which “Full House” portrayed her weight loss journey, having shed approximately 20 pounds during the break between seasons.
“She recalled them finding it impressive, suggesting, ‘Perhaps for the introductory credits, let’s show you cycling on an exercise bike as a way to endorse it?’,” Bure explained, noting that she saw nothing wrong with the proposal.
“I mean, I really put a lot of hard work and effort into losing 20 pounds,” she continued.
In a different part of the interview, Danielle Fishel (the host of “Pod Meets World” and Topanga Lawrence from “Boy Meets World”) revealed a private incident from their show’s past. Specifically, she mentioned an episode titled “She’s Having My Baby Back Ribs” in Season 7, which centered around the weight gain of her co-star Will Friedle (also a podcast co-host). Fishel stated that neither she nor the other “Boy Meets World” cast members were consulted about the weight gain storyline.
“Fishel shared that he was summoned to the office where they informed him they planned to address the issue. It wasn’t so much a question as a statement, ‘We thought you should be aware…it seems your team has put on a few pounds. Therefore, we’re going to create an episode centered around this topic,'” (paraphrased)
“Fishel recalled thinking, ‘Gosh, it seems they’re focusing an entire episode on my weight gain,’ she said. Now, I find myself accepting it because they didn’t offer any other options. Even if they had, I doubt I would have felt at ease saying, ‘No, I don’t want to participate.'”
