As a seasoned film connoisseur who has traversed the globe to savor the rich tapestry of cinematic artistry, I must admit that “Universal Language” has piqued my interest like no other. The film’s unique premise, humor, and cross-cultural charm resonate deeply with my own experiences in navigating diverse cultures during my globe-trotting adventures.
As a passionate movie buff, I’m thrilled to share that my film, “Universal Language,” was honored with the first-ever Audience Award at the prestigious Cannes Directors’ Fortnight. This recognition comes from Best Friend Forever, who has graciously represented me in international markets.
The movie, serving as Rankin’s sequel to the acclaimed surreal film “The Twentieth Century,” is a comedic production set in an alternate Canada where Persian and French are recognized as the two primary languages. The narrative revolves around various characters, such as schoolchildren Negin and Nazgol who discover a sum of money trapped in winter ice and attempt to collect it. Simultaneously, Massoud guides a band of puzzled tourists through Winnipeg’s landmarks and historical sites. Matthew decides to abandon his unfulfilling position within a Quebecois government office and embarks on a mysterious quest to find his mother. “Universal Language” was penned by Pirouz Nemati and Ila Firouzabadi.
In his critique at Cannes, EbMaster’s Peter Debruge described it as a charming blend of cultures, intended to honor our unique characteristics.
The film was earlier recognized with the Canadian Discovery award at the Toronto International Film Festival, in addition to numerous awards worldwide. It has also been screened at the New York Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival, as well as the BFI London.
In my perspective, the essence of our film is rooted in a borderless existence and an unwavering sense of belonging. Amidst a world that’s growing more divided and volatile, I believe our movie serves as a testament to the inherent ability of people – who may seem worlds apart – to build a harmonious world, share laughter, and find joy before nightfall.” – Rankin
As a passionate enthusiast, I’d like to share my appreciation for ‘Universal Language,’ a breathtaking creation born from a tight-knit circle of friends who are as eccentric as they are loving. This film is a vibrant representation of our friendship and shared experiences, weaving together the fabric of Winnipeg, Tehran, and Montreal in a way that transcends dimensions.
Daniel Berger, President of Oscilloscope, commented that their company had previously worked on Rankin’s “The Twentieth Century,” and referred to him as an exceptional and energetic artist. He expressed great admiration for the film “Universal Language,” which has garnered immense appreciation from both viewers and critics. Collaborating with such a visionary team is a source of motivation, he added, and he firmly believes that this movie has the potential to bring light and joy to everyone who watches it.
Oscilloscope Laboratories will debut ‘Universal Language’ in selected American cinemas on February 12th. This movie was brought to life by Metafilms, the production company of Sylvain Corbeil.
