If you’re playing The Outer Worlds 2, you might be asking if you can change your character’s skills or abilities. Many RPGs let you reset or reassign points, which is helpful if you want to experiment with different builds or correct earlier choices. However, you won’t find that feature in this game.

Can you respec in the Outer Worlds 2?
Good news! You can change your character’s build if you want to. But here’s the catch – you only get one shot at it, and it has to be done pretty early on, once the main story really kicks off. So make sure you think it through before you respec!
When are you able to respec?
Here’s what you need to know about The Outer Worlds 2 respec function:
- When you start the campaign, you’re able to select various skills and traits while creating your character.
- From there, you’d go through the prologue, which takes place in Horizon Point Station.
- After the prologue, there’s a short cutscene where your character is reawakened by a drone companion named Valerie.
- At this point, you can respond with: “[Respec] That’s probably for the best. I do feel a little different.”
This lets you change your character’s skills and abilities. You can only do this once during the game, so choose carefully!

How does this affect leveling your character and companions?
In an interview with RPG Site, the developers explained their reasoning. Brian Adler, the game director for The Outer Worlds 2, said the goal was to make sure players realize their decisions have lasting consequences, encouraging them to think carefully before making choices.
Your choices here do matter for the rest of the game. Because you can’t change your decisions later, think carefully about which character traits (quirks) you pick. It’s also important to plan out how you want to develop your companions.
- One of two potential companion perks can be chosen every five levels. These passives greatly boost their capabilities, but each choice is permanent.
- You receive companion mod kits when you complete their respective quests. These quirks grant additional boons, but thankfully, you can switch between the available options.
That wraps up our guide to respecing your character in The Outer Worlds 2. Currently, the system is quite limited, and it seems we’ll need to wait to see if the developers make any changes. A mod created by the community might be available soon to offer more flexibility, hopefully without causing issues with your game.
To help you create a powerful character, we recommend checking out our guides to the best skills, traits, and flaws. These will give you a solid foundation for making important decisions about your character’s development.
