With Valve’s newly released game, Deadlock, gaining traction among early access users numbering in the tens of thousands, there’s a common query resurfacing. Is it playable on Steam Deck as well? Let me shed some light on the situation.
Can you play Deadlock on the Steam Deck?
At the moment, there’s no formal support for Deadlock on the Steam Deck, but it can still be run. However, due to limitations, multiplayer matchmaking isn’t available, so you might need to modify the game’s files if you want to enjoy it while mobile.
If you’re interested, community members have already created preliminary control setup designs that you can adapt if desired. However, please note that these are not officially endorsed by the developers, so you may encounter some inconsistencies or peculiarities, especially considering the intricate nature of a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) like Deadlock.
When will official Steam Deck support roll out?
At PAX Australia, TopMob held a conversation with Valve, discussing the possibility of playing Deadlock on the Steam Deck. However, they emphasized that the project is still in its infancy, and there’s a lot of work left for the new MOBA before it can be playable on the platform.
Yazan Aldehayyat, the Hardware Engineer, mentioned that Deadlock is currently in an early stage. Since none of them are working on Deadlock, they don’t have any updates to provide at the moment. However, based on their current knowledge, it appears to be a work in progress.
Jay Shaw, the designer, mentioned that many games at this stage are early access. He believes that when it comes to controlling mechanisms and compatibility, few games like Deadlock would prefer not to finalize these aspects just yet.
They’re currently focusing on multiple areas to ensure optimal performance. Our aim is for each game, including ours, to run smoothly on the Steam Deck, and we anticipate this functionality at its initial release.
Whenever Deadlock exits its early access phase, it seems that Valve plans to offer official Steam Deck compatibility. However, considering the early stage of development, the full release of Deadlock might still be a couple more years away.
Regardless of the intricate aspects of this game, such as its extensive character list and multiple intricate systems, they’re excited to ensure it remains enjoyable on a portable device when the opportune moment arrives.
Shaw clarified that one of the difficulties they encountered was devising a control scheme for various PC games, as these games offer numerous interaction methods. It proved challenging to create a scheme that accommodates playing all of them effectively.
