The upcoming movie “Drop” is the newest creation from director Christopher Landon, known for his work on the “Happy Death Day” films and the “Paranormal Activity” series, as well as the recent slasher comedy “Heart Eyes.” Unlike his previous works, “Drop” offers a distinctly different flavor. This film is a modern take on classic Hitchcock-style thrillers, set against the backdrop of today’s technology, including social media, memes, iPhones, and AirDrops.
The script for ‘Drop’, penned by Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach, opens with the introduction of Violet Gates, a widowed single mother played by Meghann Fahy. After the tragic loss of her husband, Violet has been dedicated to assisting abuse survivors and prioritizing the care of her young son, Toby (Jacob Robinson).

Encouraged by her sister Jen (Violett Beane), Violet hesitantly consents to a date with Henry Campbell, a handsome photographer (Brandon Sklenar). Despite not having met in person, they had connected three months prior through a dating app and decided to meet for the first time at The Palate, an upscale restaurant on the 38th floor of a city skyscraper. The evening begins amicably as they both grapple with their shared nervousness. However, things take a turn when Violet starts receiving numerous mysterious messages on her phone.
Initially, the messages appear as annoying jokes, but they soon take a darker, more menacing turn. These messages are transmitted to her via Digidrop, similar to Apple’s AirDrop, implying that the sender is physically present within the restaurant. Henry assists Violet in identifying the culprit, but without success. The most chilling message she receives is one that demands she murder her date.
Straight away, Violet flatly declines. However, when the enigmatic adversary displays a photograph of a masked henchman within her residence, she’s faced with an appalling dilemma: either consent and carry out the murder of an apparently caring man, or resist and potentially endanger her son and sister. From then on, “Drop” delivers a blend of suspenseful mystery and excitement as Violet strives to uncover the identity of her tormentor while simultaneously attempting to outwit them at every turn.

The movie “Drop” possesses a nostalgic feel, evident in its simple enjoyment factor and absurd elements. While certain aspects may not withstand close examination, such as plot inconsistencies and minor timing issues, the director skillfully keeps our minds distracted from these flaws. Moreover, Landon capitalizes on the talents of actors Fahy and Sklenar, whose dedication and chemistry effectively strengthen the occasionally questionable content.
Drop” is an entertaining and enjoyable date-night thriller that doesn’t overcomplicate things for its viewers. It delivers straightforward amusement, and I must admit, I find myself admiring its self-awareness. Landon skillfully manages the plot while Fahy and Sklenar engage us enough to invest in their characters. Although it may not leave a lasting impression once the credits roll, the enjoyment you’ll get from watching it will make the ticket price worthwhile.
