Cameron Diaz Stopped Acting for 11 Years Because ‘I Had to Reclaim My Life’ and ‘No One’s Offer Could Change My Mind About Taking Care of Myself’

As a movie lover with a soft spot for the golden age of Hollywood, it’s heartening to witness Cameron Diaz‘s return to the silver screen after a decade-long hiatus. Her decision to prioritize her family and personal growth is commendable, and it’s clear that she has not lost her passion for storytelling and entertainment.

Next year, Cameron Diaz will star in Netflix’s action comedy “Back in Action” alongside Jamie Foxx, making it her first film role in 11 years. For the past decade, she has stepped away from Hollywood to prioritize her family (she has two kids with husband Benji Madden) and venture into businesses such as her successful wine brand Avaline. At Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit, Diaz reaffirmed her choice to take a break from acting for over a decade.

In my eyes, it was a necessary step,” I found myself saying. “It seemed vital for me to take this action to regain control of my existence. Frankly, at that moment, nothing else mattered to me.

Diaz emphasized that no one’s opinions, achievements, proposals, or anything else could sway her from prioritizing self-care and crafting the life she truly desired. Essentially, she stated that the key question is: What ignites your passion? For Diaz, it was creating her family.

After a break from acting, Cameron is set to make her comeback. Beginning January 17, 2025, viewers can stream “Back in Action” on Netflix. This action-packed movie revolves around two former CIA agents (played by Diaz and Foxx) who are compelled to resume their espionage activities when their hidden identities are revealed. Directed by Seth Gordon, the film also features Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott, and Glenn Close in key roles.

As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve got an exciting update coming my way! You see, I’ll be reprising my role as Fiona in the upcoming “Shrek” film franchise installment, number five! This new adventure will bring back Mike Myers as Shrek and Eddie Murphy as Donkey. Before this, my last appearances on the big screen were in 2014 with films like “The Other Woman,” “Sex Tape,” and a modern take on “Annie.” Can’t wait to dive back into the world of cinema!

In the late ’90s and early 2000s, Diaz was a highly sought-after Hollywood actor, achieving fame following her movie debut alongside Jim Carrey in “The Mask” in 1994. She then went on to act in numerous hit romantic comedies such as “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “There’s Something About Mary,” “Charlie’s Angels,” and “Shrek.” In 2018, she announced her retirement from acting, making her role as Miss Hannigan in “Annie” her final on-screen appearance.
