Call of Duty finally gets menu overhaul ahead of Black Ops 6 but it’s still “terrible”

As a long-time Call of Duty player with memories spanning across multiple generations of consoles, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia tinged with frustration when it comes to the recent overhaul of the Call of Duty HQ app. While I appreciate the developers’ efforts to streamline and modernize the UI, the new layout seems more complicated than its predecessor for me.

As a die-hard Call of Duty enthusiast, I was thrilled when an upgrade graced our beloved app, promising a much-anticipated facelift for the HQ. However, even with its sleek new user interface, some players, including myself, are finding it hard to warm up to this revamped version.

For quite some time now, gamers have been expressing annoyance about the organization of menus within Call of Duty games. Since the launch of Modern Warfare in 2019, the app has hosted every title in the series, but locating a specific game or game mode within it can be challenging for many players.

As Black Ops 6 nears its release, developers aimed to solve navigation issues by revamping the user interface. Now, all games are consolidated under a single tab, while the main screen displays the latest or most significant content, along with the modes you recently played.

Nevertheless, even with the modifications, the layout remains complex for players when contrasted to other games they’ve encountered.

One Reddit user expressed a desire for returning to the basic menus of classic coding games, stating “Could we perhaps revert back to the straightforward menus of old-school cod games instead?” Many others echoed this sentiment, noting that the recent UI changes don’t seem to tackle the main issues.

The user inquired about the real enhancement brought by the ‘upgraded’ edition. However, it seems that to play the game, you still need to open HQ, select the desired game, and then initiate the game itself.

In a different Reddit discussion, there was generally agreement on the issue. Although many gamers admitted that the menus were improved, they contended that housing numerous Call of Duty games within a single application remains messy and disorganized.

One frustrated gamer lamented, “Couldn’t games simply return to being standalone applications again? I don’t understand why they all need to be interconnected like this.” Another shared similar sentiments, expressing nostalgia for the days when “the game was just what it was.

It appears that certain gamers have noted the rationale behind consolidating every game in the Call of Duty HQ app. This is because all the games have integrated with Warzone, making it convenient to have them all accessible within a single application. However, some players criticize the user interface due to the success of the battle royale mode, stating that it has led to an “unfortunate” user experience.

Since Black Ops 6 is set to merge with Warzone during Season 1, it seems unlikely that developers will separate the games into individual apps anytime in the near future.
