Call Of Duty File Sizes Are Getting Smaller, Including Black Ops 6

As an avid gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say the latest update from Activision for Call of Duty is music to my ears! The ability to control what content I download and having smaller file sizes has been long overdue. I can’t help but think back to those days when a simple patch would take up half my hard drive space.

On the horizon, Call of Duty is altering its traditionally large file sizes that tend to consume substantial storage, particularly on older systems such as PlayStation 4. Before the release of Black Ops 6, Activision aims to provide players with more control over the content they wish to download from the Call of Duty universe.

On August 21, alongside the release of Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone’s Season 5 Reloaded, a significant update is coming. This update not only brings new seasonal content but also some additional tweaks to reduce the file size. These adjustments involve rearranging game files, separating Warzone from the standard download for yearly releases, and incorporating novel texture streaming technology.

Starting from now, when you buy an annual Call of Duty release, you’ll only need to download that specific title. However, Warzone can be downloaded as an optional addition which players can choose to get at their convenience, either during the initial update or whenever they prefer in the future.

Activision expresses that flexibility and personal preference are crucial. They aim to empower players by allowing them to decide when and in what way they want to download every Call of Duty title, including Call of Duty: Warzone.

Reduced file sizes in Call of Duty are partly due to its increased use of texture streaming. In simpler terms, this means that less frequently used game content is stored in a streaming cache instead of being downloaded directly onto your device, which saves space. In the future, more content will be added to this cache.

As a gamer, I want to let you know that Activision has warned us about a substantial file size for the initial update. Don’t worry though, this download won’t permanently expand the storage space Call of Duty occupies on our devices. Instead, it’s all about rearranging the game files and integrating fresh tech to set the stage for Call of Duty’s upcoming new user interface coming in October.

In simpler terms, all players using PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, or PC platforms will be able to get the entire update by downloading it once, just like the initial updates you typically need to play Call of Duty games.

PlayStation 5 gamers follow a unique update procedure. Instead of one large download, users will get this update in four distinct parts. The first download functions like the initial updates needed before launching Call of Duty games. However, a second update will be initiated within the Call of Duty app after you’ve played Modern Warfare 3 (MW3) or Warzone for the first time. Once this second update is finished, there will be another download specifically when revisiting MW3. Lastly, there will be a final download when returning to Warzone.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that when I’m downloading Modern Warfare 2 on my PlayStation 5, the process seems a bit different. It appears that due to unique file arrangements, the console needs to split the download into parts. This means the initial download might be larger for those who already have some MW2 content installed.

To express gratitude to the community for finishing this download, the game’s publisher is offering players a set of Battle Pass Tier Skips and double XP tokens as a gift. From the commencement of Season 5 Reloaded until the conclusion of Season 5, those who finish the download and log in will receive these rewards:

  • 10 – 1-Hour Double Player XP Tokens (10 Hours Total)
  • 10 – 1-Hour Double Weapon XP Tokens (10 Hours Total)
  • 10- Battle Pass Token Tier Skips

The tokens and level jumps will be given to the gamer as soon as they initially log into Call of Duty following the completion of the Season 5 Reloaded update.

Black Ops 6 was initially stated to require a 300GB download, but Activision clarified that this isn’t the true size of the game, and the reduction will be due to an upcoming update. However, if a player decides to install Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Warzone, all related content packs as well, the game size could expand significantly.

For those eager to experience Black Ops 6 ahead of its release, here’s how to secure early access to the beta happening later this month. The highly anticipated game is set to launch on October 25 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC. A sneak peek at the multiplayer gameplay for Black Ops 6 will be unveiled during the Call of Duty: Next event scheduled for August 28.
