Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 current & last-gen version differences

As someone who has been a dedicated fan of the Call of Duty series since the early days of Black Ops III, I must say, I find it quite refreshing that this time around, last-gen console gamers won’t be left too far behind. While it’s true that the next entry in the Black Ops saga, BO6, will lack some features on last-gen consoles compared to their current counterparts, I’m still excited about the prospect of diving back into the Black Ops universe once more.

As a hardcore gamer, I’ve noticed a couple of substantial distinctions when playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 on the latest generation consoles compared to the previous ones. It might not be immediately apparent, but trust me – it makes all the difference!

2015 marked the last time Call of Duty: Black Ops III was playable on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Fans were given a three-year window to transition to the next console generation, as Activision ceased support for these platforms, focusing solely on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One thereafter.

Instead of having four years as a headstart, Black Ops Cold War was initially released on the new-gen consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X) while gamers using PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will still be able to buy Black Ops 6 for their older systems when the next series installment comes out on October 25.

Because the older gaming consoles are several years outdated technologically, they won’t support some key features found in the latest edition of BO6.

What’s the difference between Black Ops 6 current & last-gen?

CharlieIntel confirmed the two main differences between current and last-gen consoles.

  • There is no Theater Mode available on last-gen
  • There is no Split-Screen support on last-gen for any mode

For the very first time, a Call of Duty game has incorporated a Theater Mode since the release of Black Ops Cold War in 2020. This feature enables players to capture gameplay footage which can be subsequently shared online. Initially introduced, Theater Mode evolved to enable users to rewatch their Zombies and Blackout game sessions as well.

As Theater Mode was not included during the beta phase and Treyarch hasn’t provided much detail about its functioning, it remains uncertain how the Theater Mode will operate in Black Ops 6.

In many first-person shooter series, the split-screen feature is rarely used these days. However, players using current generation consoles can still enjoy this feature in certain game modes within Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
