Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 - Analyst Says Game Pass Didn't Hurt Numbers

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has been nothing short of exhilarating. The fact that it debuted on Game Pass on day one was initially met with skepticism, but from where I stand, it seems to have been a masterstroke.

The launch of a new Call of Duty game is typically among the highest-grossing games in a given year. However, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 becoming available on Game Pass simultaneously with its release on Xbox Series X|S and other platforms, there was speculation about whether this move might affect its sales and influence. At this point, it’s still uncertain what the final outcome will be, but one expert has suggested that Black Ops 6 hasn’t suffered any negative impact from being offered on Game Pass.

According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, the level of engagement in Call of Duty after the launch of Black Ops 6 can only be described as “extraordinarily high” or simply “crazy.” This level of engagement has not been seen before in their tracking data. There’s been a continuous argument about Game Pass and its influence on sales, but it remains unresolved because… it varies. Sometimes it boosts sales (particularly through virality), while other times it negatively affects them. Two weeks after the release, Piscatella suggests that Game Pass may not have contributed to the sales of this game, but it also didn’t appear to hinder them.

As stated by Activision, Black Ops 6 set a new record for the franchise with the highest number of total players, hours played, and matches during its opening weekend. This significant boost in popularity is reportedly due to Game Pass rekindling the interest of previous fans who had taken a break from the long-standing series, according to Treyarch associate creative director Miles Leslie.

Leslie stated, “After 16 years of involvement, we’ve reached a stage where games like Black Ops and Call of Duty have been around for quite some time. The question for us now is: How do we keep our dedicated Call of Duty fans engaged, but also make the game accessible to new players who are just joining in?

To finalize the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Microsoft had to agree to certain terms, one being that Call of Duty games would continue to be available on PlayStation consoles for at least ten years. Although Activision hasn’t disclosed sales figures for Black Ops 6, making it available on Game Pass appears to have met the company’s objectives for the franchise – at least temporarily.
