California Gov. Gavin Newsom Proposes $7.5 Billion Federal Film Incentive After Trump Floats Tariffs

A day following Donald Trump’s announcement of proposed 100% tariffs on movies originating from other countries, California Governor Gavin Newsom has expressed interest in working together with the President to establish a $7.5 billion federal tax break aimed at supporting the movie industry, as reported by The New York Times.

If Newsom’s proposal gets approval, it would mark the largest single government subsidy plan ever in the U.S., and it would be the only one at a federal level. While tax breaks for film productions have been approved in over thirty states, there is no federal-level plan currently in existence.

America remains a leading force in movie production, and California is keen to attract even more filmmaking within its borders,” stated Newsom on Monday. “We are ready to collaborate with the Trump administration to enhance our existing state program, aiming to bolster domestic film production and contribute to the initiative ‘Make America Film Once More’.
