As a fervent admirer of Caleb Azumah Nelson‘s captivating narrative abilities and profound understanding of human emotions, I am beyond thrilled to witness the transformation of his debut novel “Open Water” into an eight-part series.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that I, Caleb Azumah Nelson, am stepping into multiple roles for the upcoming BBC adaptation of my debut novel, “Open Water.” I’ll be writing the script, taking on the director’s chair, and serving as an executive producer. It’s a significant journey, and I can hardly wait to bring this story to life on the small screen!

The eight-episode series is set to be created jointly by Mam Tor Productions, a subsidiary of Banijay U.K., and B-Side Productions.

The storyline of “Open Water” revolves around the developing bond between Marcus, a retail employee with an interest in photography, and Effie, a dance student.

As soon as they come across each other, there’s an unquestionable bond between them,” is suggested for paraphrasing. “However, Marcus discovers that Effie is in a relationship with his friend Samuel, a line he’s determined not to trespass. A mutual venture, capturing and recording the creative works of Black artists in London, brings them closer, but will their growing friendship be able to withstand the magnetic force of attraction?

The series will be broadcast on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

BBC drama director Lindsay Salt commissioned the series. Joining Azumah Nelson as exec producers are Tally Garner for Mam Tor Productions, Matimba Kabalika for B-Side Productions, and Rebecca Ferguson and Danielle Scott-Haughton for the BBC. Banijay Rights are repping global sales.

Azumah Nelson has shared his delight about collaborating with Mam Tor, B-Side, and the BBC on the screen adaptation of ‘Open Water’. He’s eager for audiences to get acquainted with Marcus and Effie, not just as characters, but as individuals with their own private lives, communities, and desires. He feels fortunate to be part of sharing this story at this moment in time.

Salt stated: “The novel ‘Open Water’ is a touching, courageous, and stunning tale that explores the delicate dance of new love and being truly recognized. The reaction to Caleb’s book was astounding, and we feel honored to collaborate with him in adapting this captivating romance for BBC.
