CalArts, Chanel Launch Center for Artists and Tech With AI Focus

Chanel is planning to establish a fresh Chanel Artists and Technology Center at California Institute of the Arts, with construction set to start in the fall.

The Center, located at the Calif. campus of Santa Clarita, offers advanced tech resources for exploration, study, and innovation to students, faculty, and visiting scholars in various creative fields. It primarily focuses on AI/machine learning and digital imaging but also seeks to connect museums, universities, and technology firms. A search is ongoing for an executive director.

Through the Chanel Culture Fund, we’ll secure necessary resources for gear, invite visiting professionals such as experts, artists, and tech residents, offer graduate scholarships, and support forward-thinking research and innovation in creation. Additionally, our Center plans to organize an annual conference discussing artists’ interactions with cutting-edge technologies.

According to CalArts president Ravi S. Rajan, the Chanel Center for Artists and Technology at CalArts brings to life a vision that’s long been a dream. He believes that artists throughout history and across cultures have consistently led us towards a more imaginative, captivating, and fair future. Rajan is thankful to the Chanel Culture Fund for aligning with their vision of putting artists at the forefront of developing technologies that will impact our lives and society. It’s in CalArts’ nature to create groundbreaking initiatives, having been shaped since its establishment by Walt and Roy Disney, and the Chanel Center for Artists and Technology will continue this tradition by helping shape the future of technology in the arts.

Yana Peel, Chanel’s global head of arts and culture, stated, “Artists have consistently demonstrated what lies ahead by continuously developing fresh concepts. In the rapidly evolving era of AI, the Chanel Center for Artists and Technology will empower and inspire creators from various fields to tap into this innovation, propelling human creativity to unprecedented heights.
