Independent documentary producer Sandbox Films has brought on Caitlin Mae Burke as their new head of production and development. In this role, Burke will collaborate closely with the company’s executive director, Jessica Harrop, to contribute significantly to deciding which projects the company invests in, maintain partnerships with organizations like Sundance, and supervise Sandbox Films’ documentaries from conceptualization to completion including both production and post-production phases.

As a producer and arts administrator, it’s a blessing to emulate this model within the organization. Burke, who has won an Emmy and been nominated for an Oscar, is now part of Sandbox Films. This studio is currently working on more than 20 documentary features, some of which are already in production, as well as a short series in collaboration with The New York Times’ Op-Docs.
globally, Burke’s work has been shown in cinemas; her latest venture, “Realm of Satan” directed by Scott Cummings, debuted at the 2024 Sundance Festival. As a co-director for IF/Then Shorts at Field of Vision, she managed more than 115 short documentaries from conception to distribution, serving as supervising or executive producer. One of these projects, “Between Earth and Sky,” was nominated for an Oscar in 2023.
Harrop expressed his excitement about Caitlin joining our team for this significant position. She brings a rare blend of talents, including managing a portfolio of film projects at an executive level and hands-on production experience in groundbreaking documentaries. Her impressive history of supporting emerging artists aligns perfectly with our objectives.
Established in 2020, Sandbox Films has been a trailblazer in creating groundbreaking scientific documentaries over the past few years. Among their notable productions are “Fire of Love,” which was nominated for an Oscar and won a Peabody, as well as the Sundance Grand Jury winners “Nocturnes” and “All Light, Everywhere.” Other films under their belt include Werner Herzog’s “Fireball,” the Emmy-winning films “Fathom” and “How to Survive a Pandemic.” Sandbox also collaborates with the Sundance Institute to provide grants for artists telling science-related stories. They also boast a NYC studio equipped with an ATMOS-certified screening room, accessible to nonfiction filmmakers.
