Caddo Lake’s Shyamalan-Style Twist Ending, Explained

As a seasoned time-travel enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of paradoxes and temporal anomalies, I must say this tale has left me utterly bewildered yet strangely intrigued. The intertwining lives of these redheads, Celeste and Ellie, are more than just a twist of fate; it’s a kaleidoscope of family secrets, love, and loss.

There’s nothing quite like a good swamp movie. When used correctly, a swamp can represent all sorts of things: mystery, danger, the power of nature … In Caddo Lake, a brain-melting sci-fi film starring Dylan O’Brien that hit Max last month, the wetlands symbolize all of the above and then some as multiple characters try to get to the root of some seriously-hard-to-explain events.

In a new take, O’Brien portrays Paris, whose actions at the lake rekindle doubts about his mother’s demise. Simultaneously, a teenage girl named Ellie (Eliza Scanlen) finds herself in a panic as her sister, Anna, vanishes after joining her at the lake following a dysfunctional family gathering. As Paris and Ellie navigate the swamp together, they stumble upon an astonishing truth about their home.

M. Night Shyamalan directed the film “Caddo Lake,” so it’s no surprise that the movie concludes with a mind-bending twist – a plot development that might cause you to ponder and even sketch out a family tree on your coffee table in disbelief. Fancy diving into this mystery together? Absolutely!

Essentially, the narrative revolves around two intertwining tales – those of Paris and Ellie.

While working by the lake, Paris stumbles upon an unusual area that triggers a seizure and temporary hearing loss, intensifying his belief that his mother’s death in 1999 wasn’t due to natural causes. Previously, she had driven off a bridge during a seizure. This incident on the lake occurs soon after Paris vowed to his girlfriend to be less detached as they strive to mend their relationship. Consequently, he disappoints her once more and becomes fixated on unraveling the mystery.

In the meantime, Ellie is attempting to locate her father’s death certificate since it has been such a long time that her mother, Celeste (Lauren Ambrose), ought to have received one. However, their relationship is complicated, so when Celeste sees Ellie searching for the document, she becomes upset, causing Ellie to leave and return to her friend’s house where she’s been staying for weeks. This action leads Anna to follow her out, eventually disappearing, which then triggers a search.

At a point of intense anger, Celeste reveals to Ellie that her father was not lost; instead, he left her, having found someone else and abandoned them. Celeste had an encounter with this woman at the store when Ellie was still an infant, but even though Celeste mentioned her boyfriend had a newborn, Ellie’s father never returned (a detail that becomes significant later on).

Hmm, it seems unusual about Paris’s seizure episodes. Are there any other peculiar occurrences happening around Caddo Lake? Strange noises, such as metallic clanging, echo from the lake, and her dog appears to be unusually alarmed by it without any apparent cause.

It’s not a good omen.

Let me rephrase that for you: “Hmm, what’s happened to it?” To clarify, we need to delve a bit deeper into the story of Caddo Lake. Unfortunately, this lake is currently suffering from a drought, and Paris comes to realize that his mother’s seizures often occurred during dry periods. Here’s an interesting twist: there exists within the lake a peculiar feature – a temporal portal, allowing people to traverse through time when they walk through it.

It appears that Paris’s storyline occurred in 2003, the year he vanished without a trace, while Anna and Ellie’s narrative unfolds in 2022. Interestingly, both Paris and Anna seem to have passed through a time portal, with Paris eventually encountering her. Upon taking her for assistance, he discovers it’s 1952 instead. So, you might wonder if he simply abandoned her there?

It’s an intriguing query indeed! So, it seems like Anna is somehow trapped in the year 1952. As for how they both ended up in the same year, that’s quite perplexing. Did Paris travel to 2022, grab Anna, and then transport them both back to 1952? Or was it merely a coincidence that they both landed in 1952? Alas, I cannot provide a definitive answer to this conundrum.

However, it’s important to clarify that Anna doesn’t merely remain stuck in the year 1952. Instead, when Ellie eventually uncovers the portal, she is transported into the year 2005. In this new era, she observes Anna’s necklace dangling from the rearview mirror of a truck. (Additionally, Paris had stumbled upon the same necklace in 2003 and recognized its similarity to… I’ll explain more about that later.)

In Ellie’s attempt to steal a necklace from the truck, its owner, holding a baby, confronted her angrily. At this moment in the film, it became clear that the two women with red hair, present in both timeframes, were undeniably the same individual. Celeste is Paris’s former girlfriend from earlier times.

Is that correct? So, it turns out that Ellie is the young lady whom Celeste met on that particular occasion, and the infant in Celeste’s arms in 2005, who Ellie is looking at, is herself.

Indeed, he is her biological father. In the year 2003, just prior to his disappearance, he impregnated Celeste. To corroborate this, her grandmother presents her with a missing persons flyer as evidence.

That’s quite surprising. But hold on, it seems there’s more to come. Turns out, Ellie learns that Paris’s mom passed away not long ago, and her name was…

ANNA!

I can’t believe it! Ellie did some detective work at the library back in 2005 and found Anna among numerous school photos spanning multiple decades. Apparently, when Anna traveled through time, she didn’t just stop living; instead, she started a new life for herself, even building a family along the way.

So that makes Anna Ellie’s … paternal grandmother?
You’ve got it.

Perhaps she kept her time-traveling secret because she encountered disbelief or fear when she tried to share it, or maybe she was concerned about being experimented on by the government if they believed her. Another possibility is that she found joy in living in the ’50s and preferred not to disrupt her experience by revealing her unique ability.

What was the cause of Anna’s death in the year 1999?
I’ve been pondering that question myself. I’m not sure if there’s any special significance to the year. It would have been more fitting for her to pass away in 2014, as that’s when she should have been born based on her “true” timeline (if Anna is 8 years old in 2022, then she would have been born in 2014). However, time travel logic can often be quite unstable.

Indeed. To clarify, let’s revisit the topic of the time portal. You may recall that it only functions during periods of low water. Once the water rises again, it shuts down. It appears the alligator might have been in the middle of passing through when the portal closed abruptly, resulting in its being cut in half.

The manner of his demise turns out to be crucial for our conclusion: In the current year (2022), police apprehend Paris when they discover him aboard Anna’s missing boat. He manages to escape and becomes desperate to return to 2003, where his family is. Regrettably, the dilapidated dam near the lake collapses, inundating the area with water. We learn from a news broadcast that Paris perished there by drowning.

Okay, that’s a really horrible way to go.
But I guess the good news is that Ellie does make it back, and she returns with a newfound sense of connection to her family, biological and otherwise. Also, while running from police, Paris steals Celeste and her husband Daniel’s car, so when Ellie tells her everything that happened, she’s more inclined to believe her.

It’s quite relieving, essentially. In other words, the main takeaway from this tale is to avoid getting stuck in a conflict again, much like one should steer clear of swamps.
