As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the upcoming San Sebastian Festival’s Creative Investors’ Conference promises to be a veritable feast for film enthusiasts and industry insiders alike. With heavyweights like Roeg Sutherland from CAA Media Finance, Goodfellas’ Vincent Maraval, and Jeremy Thomas of Recorded Picture Company gracing our screens, it’s clear that we’re in for a treat.
Roeg Sutherland from CAA Media Finance, Vincent Maraval of Goodfellas, and Jeremy Thomas from Recorded Picture Company are expected to attend the 2024 Creative Investors’ Conference at the San Sebastian Festival. This conference, now in its third year, is jointly organized by CAA Media Finance and has been a collaboration for three years running.
The Conference will run Sept. 24-25 at San Sebastian’s Tabakalera center.
Prominent executives poised to make their mark at the upcoming festival as the global film industry discusses strategies for growth amid ongoing challenges such as slow post-pandemic box office recovery and shrinking investment in streaming platforms, include Netflix’s Teresa Moneo, Mubi’s Bobby Allen, Anton Corp.’s Louis Balsan, Charades’ Yohann Conte, Caroline Benjo from France’s Haut et Court, David Davoli at Anonymous Content, Infinity Hill’s Axel Kuschevatzky, Good Chaos’ Mike Goodridge, Matías Mosteirín at K&S Films, Bronte Payne at Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment, Killer Films’ Christine Vachon and Michael Weber at The Match Factory. In simpler terms, these are key figures in the film industry who will be attending the festival while discussing ways to grow the industry despite post-pandemic struggles and decreasing streaming investments.
At the upcoming Conference, Sutherland from CAA Media Finance is set to attend, along with Sarah Schweitsmann and Nick Ogiony from CAA. These individuals will also be leading various discussions. Additionally, Wendy Mitchell, a representative of San Sebastián as well as an advisor, will also take part in moderating some talks.
Thomas will be the subject of a fireside chat.
The third conference is poised to tackle some tough issues head-on, as one discussion will focus on the current state of the U.S., particularly regarding the limited distribution options within the country that pose challenges in film funding.
Discussions yet to be addressed also involve the shape of Europe’s film and TV industry, as American producers increasingly turn to European countries as a source of soft financing for their projects. This could explain why this year’s conference might have a greater emphasis on both Europe and other regions such as South Korea.
Additionally, discussions will center around global prospects for the Spanish market, scrutinizing the Korean film market landscape, the advantages gained by producers through innovative collaboration methods, and the direction the film industry and financing are taking in the coming years. The San Sebastian Festival made this announcement on Monday.
A detailed schedule will be announced in the next few days.
We’re absolutely delighted to receive backing from the Spanish government to host an exceptional conference, uniting film industry heavyweights worldwide for stimulating debates and chances to engage with Spain’s cinema scene and the festival itself. We extend our gratitude to CAA Media Finance for their invaluable partnership in organizing this event, which has expanded significantly over the past two years, inviting executives and investors once more in 2024.
The Third Creative Investors’ Conference in San Sebastian is included in Spanish Screenings: Financing & Tech, which is one of the key aspects of Spanish Screenings XXL – an extensive international marketplace for Spanish film production. This event is sponsored by Spain’s Ministry of Culture through its ICAA film agency and the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Civil Service, who provide their support via ICEX Spain Trade and Investment, the Malaga Festival, and the San Sebastian Festival.
