Bungie, the creator of hit games such as Halo and Destiny 2, is preparing to unveil Marathon, their eagerly awaited science fiction extraction shooter. The gameplay debut event for this project, which has been surrounded by intrigue since its announcement in May 2023, is set for April 12. This is a significant step forward for the project.
Marathon is a fresh take on Bungie’s 90s trilogy by the same name, transformed into a multiplayer extraction shooter, which is a genre that gained prominence with games like Escape from Tarkov. The game is set on the barren planet of Tau Ceti IV, where players take on the role of “Runners,” highly advanced mercenaries who scavenge for artifacts, weapons, and valuables while battling against rival players and hazardous surroundings.
The journey leading up to this unveiling has had its fair share of rough patches. After keeping quiet for a year since the first sneak peek, Marathon encountered internal hurdles, such as a change in directorial leadership from long-term Bungie member Chris Barrett to Joe Ziegler, previously with Riot Games’ VALORANT. Ziegler, who assumed control in 2024, has recently eased fans’ concerns by stating that development is progressing smoothly and they are planning for more extensive playtesting later this year.
