As a seasoned Guardian who has weathered countless battles and seen Destiny 2 evolve over time, I must say the news about the impending armor overhaul has me positively giddy with anticipation! For years now, the armor we’ve earned has felt more like functional necessities than exciting rewards. But Bungie’s commitment to revamping the system in the upcoming Frontiers expansion is a breath of fresh air that promises to invigorate the gameplay experience.
For quite some time now, armor as a reward in Destiny 2 has been perceived as rather uneventful. However, with the upcoming launch of their next significant expansion (currently known as Project Frontiers), Bungie plans to carry out a comprehensive revamp of this reward system.
The Ultimate Form signaled the conclusion of the Light and Darkness tale, wrapping up Bungie’s initial grand narrative within their cosmos. As for what follows remains somewhat enigmatic, but we do know that “Frontiers” is the code name for the upcoming major storyline due to unfold more clearly next year.
For the time being, it’s unclear what exactly lies ahead, but developers are gradually providing some hints as we approach the new era. Notably, they have confirmed that armor will undergo a significant transformation when the new era begins.
According to a comprehensive blog post published on October 1, 2024, developers are planning to significantly revamp the functioning of armor with the aim of enhancing the reward structure and encouraging diverse character builds. Let’s delve into the details of these changes.
What’s changing with Destiny 2 armor?
To start off, it’s important to highlight that these changes will unfold gradually throughout “the upcoming year,” as per Bungie’s plan. Instead of making all modifications at once, expect the adjustments to be incremental as we get closer to Frontiers.
Leading the changes, armor statistics are undergoing a complete overhaul to make them “more significant, less complex, and less restrictive.” Going into detail, we can expect that the effects of each stat won’t be tiered at every 10-point increment anymore. Instead, each point assigned to a stat will offer a noticeable advantage.
Instead of having multiple items offering a balanced distribution of stats, Bungie intends for specific armor pieces to offer significant boosts (‘spikes’) to certain attributes, resulting in more distinct gameplay experiences.
These adjustments will lead to fewer distinct statistics per armor item, but each stat will have a greater impact. Every point in a stat will offer some advantage. The end goal is to make each armor piece more captivating and simpler to assess.
Afterward, we’ll see adjustments in stats themselves, such as modifications to Discipline, Strength, and Special Ammunition, with further changes planned. The team at Bungie is currently evaluating how these particular bonuses operate to make them more significant and impactful.
To round things off, it’s great to hear that proper set bonuses are being developed at long last. Veteran Guardians may recall encountering these bonuses previously, particularly in the context of raids throughout the years. However, from now on, this aspect is being broadened and improved across all sets.
Guardians can unlock special benefits by wearing either two or four items of armor that belong to the same collection. In this way, you can fully commit to a specific gameplay style, or combine elements from two distinct sets to enjoy two separate advantages.
Each set aims to symbolize the armor’s central motif; consequently, PvP armor tends to offer benefits that are advantageous in the Crucible, such as boosting abilities there.
During these updates, we aim to make minimal adjustments to the existing Legendary armor and most Exotics, particularly at first. But don’t worry, Bungie has promised a way for players to modernize certain favorite pieces of armor to match the new stats that come with these changes.
