Despite Marathon facing challenges with player retention and not yet surpassing Destiny 2 in popularity, Bungie has a clear vision for the game’s story over the next several years.
The game, released on March 5, 2026, initially attracted 88,337 players on Steam, but it hasn’t reached that level of popularity again.
Bungie says it has Marathon’s story planned for years
So, I was reading GamesRadar, and apparently Bungie has a pretty solid plan for where the story’s going with Marathon over the next few years. But get this – they actually want us, the players, to have a say in how things unfold. That’s awesome, right? It sounds like they’re really aiming for a collaborative experience, letting our actions and feedback influence the narrative. I’m excited to see how that plays out!
We have a general idea of where we’re heading with the story over the next few years, but we’re keeping things flexible. We want our players to have a say in how it unfolds, so it’s not set in stone.
These observations come as the game Marathon continues to see modest player activity on Steam. In the last week, starting April 28, 2026, the game’s highest concurrent player count has been in the 10,000s, frequently dropping to below 10,000 players at any given time.
Even though it’s almost a decade old and hasn’t had a major update since December’s Renegades, Destiny 2 consistently attracts more players than the newer game, Marathon. It’s even come close to matching Marathon’s highest 24-hour player count several times.
Although Bungie didn’t share specific player counts, their emphasis on creating a continuing story indicates they plan to support Marathon for a long time.
The Shadow & Order update for Destiny 2, initially planned to release shortly before the Marathon event, has been pushed back to June 2026. This delay means Marathon might launch before Shadow & Order, making it the more recent update.
