Bungie Bosses Wanted Destiny 2 To Be A Subscription Service – Report

Following accusations of plagiarism against Bungie’s reimagining of Marathon, additional issues within the company have come to light. Beyond creating a hostile work environment led by upper management at Bungie, there were proposals to introduce a subscription service for Destiny 2 on top of the cost of a PlayStation Plus membership.

Previous members of Bungie shared their experiences with Save State Plus, stating that the top management often dismissed suggestions swiftly and publicly undermined team members.

A previous Destiny 2 team member asserted that most of what transpires at Bungie is driven by greed, an argument that resonated with many former employees. The proposed subscription model for Destiny 2 was allegedly rejected when the staff strongly objected to it. This would have required players to pay for a subscription on top of existing subscriptions like PlayStation Plus, depending on the platform they use. Furthermore, it’s reported that Bungie’s management reprimanded the staff in a meeting for not maximizing microtransactions enough.

Over the past eight years since Destiny 2’s debut, Bungie has implemented various adjustments in its monetization strategy. Notably, they transitioned from a traditional model to a free-to-play one. To maintain engagement and attract players, they’ve emphasized the importance of the Eververse store and seasonal content passes, which feature paid cosmetic items.

By the end of 2023, Bungie had to let go of approximately 300 employees due to a significant drop in earnings. This situation intensified the need for innovative ways to generate income from their games.

Luke Smith and Mark Noseworthy, two top-tier managers at Bungie, were among those let go, and recently, the mood concerning Marathon hasn’t been particularly favorable. However, the game’s creators are urging fans to take a look at it, despite the ongoing controversy swirling around it.

In his review for TopMob, Tamoor Hussain noted that while Marathon has great promise as a multiplayer shooter, it may struggle due to its limited content compared to other competitive multiplayer games.
