As a seasoned Destiny 2 player with countless hours invested in this captivating universe, I must confess that the recent changes to weapon crafting have left me feeling somewhat disheartened. The removal of the crafting feature for seasonal weapons in Episode Revenant has taken away an element that many players, including myself, found incredibly rewarding.

As a dedicated Destiny 2 gamer, I’ve been feeling the heat about the absence of weapon crafting for seasonal weapons in Episode Revenant. Bungie’s response didn’t exactly cool my frustration down.

In 2022’s The Witch Queen expansion, weapon crafting was introduced as an option for Guardians, enabling them to avoid the inconsistency of farmng weapons with unpredictable perks. This feature provides a reliable choice after a weapon blueprint has been acquired.

Prior to Episode Revenant, players had the option to unlock patterns for all seasonal weapons, a feature that allowed them to create their weapons entirely without relying on randomness (RNG).

Changing the rules

Before launching Revenant, Bungie explained that they wanted crafting to enhance the weapon pursuit rather than replace it. They decided to modify crafting’s function as a way for players to catch up on weapon roles they missed out on getting from their original sources.

Since The Revenant game won’t finish until February 2025 and will subsequently be replaced by Heretic, it remains uncertain how Bungie plans to incorporate crafting as a means for players to catch up on missed content. However, it is anticipated that weapons from The Revenant can only be crafted once the Episode has ended.

Regardless of the choice made, the shift in course promptly sparked feelings of annoyance, and these emotions were intensified when Tonics, items used to increase drop rates that Bungie acknowledged, did not live up to their intended purpose as a suitable substitute.

As a gamer, I learned from the latest update by Destiny 2’s assistant game director that Revenant Tonics are all about offering a unique loot experience instead of crafting, providing a fresh and exciting method to keep chasing new gear.

He acknowledged that there were issues with the Tonic timers, as they didn’t always guarantee a weapon from an active Tonic. To rectify this, he explained upcoming enhancements planned for a December 17 update to address the concerns raised by players.

Random isn’t fun

Proposing a complete replacement or suggesting new conditions, even for something generally well-received, is seldom an easy task to accomplish.

Before Stevens’ statement, it was evident that the community was already expressing strong concerns about Bungie’s decision. However, his comment that “Weapon crafting takes away the excitement of getting a random weapon, that sense that every drop could be significant,” has only served to intensify player accusations that the studio is disregarding the prevailing opinion within the community.

On Destiny 2’s massive subreddit, the response to the statement was predominantly very critical.

“Such an insensitive comment, considering all the feedback they’ve received about improving their craft,” was one response, followed by “It’s never enjoyable to force oneself to do something until it becomes a source of frustration, especially when no progress has been made in achieving one’s goals.

Similar opinions were echoed throughout the thread. “My eyes glazed over while reading this, it just feels so out of touch. Doubling down on a weapon chase is just baffling.”

“It’s astounding how they always seem oblivious to the situation,” said someone else. “As for Bungie, the true pleasure for common players lies in wielding their weapons, not speculating if the next one will make a difference.

Despite Stevens’ remarks indicating that Bungie doesn’t intend to reverse its fresh approach to item creation, intense player feedback has occasionally led Bungie to change course before, such as when they completely abandoned the concept of sunsetting.

It’s important to note that it isn’t certain if the same positive change will occur in this situation. However, there’s a possibility that the enhancements planned for Tonics by the end of 2024 could indeed prove to be the solution everyone is hoping for.
