Bucky Barnes’ Secret Reason for Becoming a Congressman in the MCU

Note: This post includes SPOILERS for Thunderbolts. The character of Bucky Barnes, portrayed by Sebastian Stan, has undergone an extensive journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) that is among the longest of any character. However, it seems that Thunderbolts may have offered justification for one of his most unexpected career decisions. Despite being one of only a few Phase 1 characters still active within the MCU timeline, Bucky remains a beloved figure among fans. The announcement of his involvement in the cast for Thunderbolts sparked much curiosity about where his story would head next. Originally a soldier during World War II, Bucky’s life took a dramatic turn when he survived a nearly fatal fall and was transformed into a weapon by HYDRA, eventually becoming the Winter Soldier.

Initially portrayed as the main antagonist in the 2014 film “Captain America: The Winter Soldier“, Bucky does not remain villainous for long. After reuniting with his former comrade, he embarks on a lengthy journey towards redemption. This transformation sees him going from a Wakandan refugee to an Avenger, and the most astonishing twist in his storyline recently has been his election as a congressman. This new role was first hinted at in “Captain America: Brave New World” earlier this year, and it initially seemed like an unexpected move by Marvel. However, the latest release “Thunderbolts*” seems to have validated this decision.

In Thunderbolts*, Bucky Barnes Has Been Congressman For Half A Term

A Full Term In Congress Is Two Years

Following the occurrences depicted in “The Falcon & The Winter Soldier,” Bucky eventually made the decision to pursue a career in the United States Congress. Although the specifics of his campaign and election are not shown, by the time he appeared on screen again in “Captain America: Brave New World,” he had become a fully-fledged member of Congress. Since “Brave New World” is set in April 2027, it can be presumed that the events of “Thunderbolts*” transpired shortly after this date, given that Bucky is still a congressman at the beginning of the film.

When the Thunderbolts meet Valentina Allegra de Fontaine at her Watchtower hideout, she discusses Bucky’s role as a congressman during their encounter. She points out that his tenure has been less than most, with only half of the usual term served by the time of the Thunderbolts. In American politics, a full congressional term lasts two years, but it seems Bucky’s stint may be coming to an end sooner due to the events taking place in the Thunderbolts series.

I’m Convinced Bucky Became Congressman To Investigate Valentina

Bucky Had No Other Motivation For Getting Involved In Politics

One intriguing enigma in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been Bucky’s transformation into a congressman, a role that initially seemed unlikely for his character. Considering his past transgressions, it was hard to imagine him being elected even after his redemption. The comic series Thunderbolts underscores this by portraying him as struggling in his political role, finding it challenging to respond to the press’ questions effectively. However, the plot of Thunderbolts hints that Bucky may have entered politics for a specific reason – possibly to get nearer to a particular individual.

In her past appearances within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Valentina had been enlisting individuals who later formed the Thunderbolts, or what some might call a new version of the Avengers. At the start of the movie, she’s under investigation for links to covert operations, a fact that Bucky appears to be cognizant of. Motivated by his desire to take down Valentina and OXE, Bucky agrees to release the Thunderbolts if they assist him. His role as a congressman granted him access to high-level government events, enabling him to gather more information and attempt to manipulate individuals close to Valentina such as Mel Gold. Given these circumstances, it’s now clear why he’s involved in politics.

Is Bucky Still A Congressman At The End Of Thunderbolts*?

Bucky Likely Stepped Down From His Position

Initially, Bucky is a congressman at the beginning of Thunderbolts, but the ending leaves his political future uncertain. With Valentina utilizing the Thunderbolts and transforming them into the New Avengers, Bucky has now become part of another organized superhero group. The post-credits scene depicts the team 14 months after the movie events, with everyone seeming comfortable in their roles. Notably, Bucky fails to mention any congressional duties, suggesting that his political career likely ended when he joined the New Avengers.

Characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe regularly risk their lives and it’s rare for someone to juggle a superhero lifestyle with an active political career. It’s doubtful that Bucky could manage both, even if he tried, as the government would likely not allow it. The most probable scenarios are either Bucky left his political position following the Thunderbolts events or he served out the remainder of his term without running for re-election. Regardless, Bucky’s new role in the MCU suggests that his most audacious career choice is now behind him.

(*Note: It seems there may have been a mistake in the original text, as Thunderbolts is not an event from the Marvel Cinematic Universe but rather a comic book series featuring a team of anti-hero supervillains and heroes.)
