‘Bridesmaids’ Director Paul Feig to Helm Bad Roommate Thriller for Blumhouse

As a seasoned movie critic with a keen eye for both comedy and horror, I’m always on the lookout for fresh and intriguing projects that blend these genres in unique ways. And when I heard that Paul Feig, the brilliant mind behind comedic classics like “Bridesmaids” and “The Heat,” was teaming up with Blumhouse to create a film based on the “Worst Roommate Ever” article, I couldn’t contain my excitement.

I’ve previously depicted the mayhem that unfolds after consuming questionable food at a Brazilian steakhouse in “Bridesmaids” and performing an urgent tracheotomy at a Denny’s in “The Heat.” Next, I, as a follower of Paul Feig’s work, will illustrate the turmoil that results from having a problematic roommate.

A renowned filmmaker recognized for his work in comedies such as “Spy,” is set to helm a new horror movie for Blumhouse, the company responsible for blockbuster hits like “The Purge” and “Get Out.” This upcoming project is adapted from an intriguing article in New York Magazine penned by William Brennan. Previously, this article inspired the successful Netflix unscripted series “Worst Roommate Ever,” which Blumhouse produced. Both seasons of this show have made it to the top 10 most-watched shows on Netflix globally when they debuted.

A newly single woman in Feig’s movie will let a man she believes is an honest gentleman rent out a spare room in her house. But soon, she realizes that his deception goes beyond using a false name and fabricated rental application. Unfortunately, she has inadvertently welcomed a serial squatter into her home, and he shows no intention of vacating without a struggle.

Feig will team up with producing partner Laura Fischer for this production. Joining them are Jason Blum, CEO and founder of Blumhouse, Chris Morgan, and Scoop Wasserstein from Vox Media. Ainsley Morgan from Chris Morgan Productions, William Brennan, Bea Sequeira from Blumhouse, and Shaun S. Sutton from Vox Media serve as executive producers. Susco, who previously collaborated with Blumhouse on “Unfriended: Dark Web,” wrote the screenplay. Haley Pigman is in charge of overseeing the project for Blumhouse.

“The phrase ‘Worst Roommate Ever’ strikes a chord due to the ease of deception in our digitally interconnected world. Yet, the narrative proves to be shocking and keeps you guessing. Paul is an ideal choice for directing this project as his work consistently explores both dark and light themes, leaving me eagerly anticipating his unique take on this captivating story.”

Feig is recognized primarily for his comedic films, but he’s also directed the gripping thriller “A Simple Favor” with Anna Kendrick, Henry Golding, and Blake Lively. He has a fantasy film, “The School for Good and Evil,” which Netflix premiered in 2022 to audiences. Upcoming projects include “Jackpot,” an action-comedy featuring Awkwafina, John Cena, and Simu Liu, set to premiere soon on Prime Video. Feig has recently completed production on the sequel to “A Simple Favor.”

“For years, Jason and I have been searching for a suitable project to team up on, and this story seems perfectly suited to provide the terror, excitement, feelings, and humor that appeals to us for scaring and amusing audiences. Simply put, I’m thrilled beyond belief to have Jason as my co-worker and roommate for this film.”

Feig is represented by CAA, Shelter PR and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
