Brian Cox’s Directorial Debut, ‘Glenrothan,’ Reveals First-Look Image as Protagonist Launches Sales Ahead of AFM (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned moviegoer who has traversed the silver screen landscapes of the world, I can confidently say that the upcoming film “Glenrothan” piques my interest like a well-aged single malt whisky. The prospect of Brian Cox making his directorial debut, especially in a project that seems to be a heartfelt homage to his native Scotland, is indeed an exciting proposition.

Brian Cox’s initial directorial endeavor, titled “Glenrothan,” has completed filming. This project is affectionately dubbed as his tribute to Scotland. A sneak peek has been unveiled, displaying the cast members from “Succession” and Alan Cumming in a setting surrounded by numerous barrels of whisky.

In addition to unveiling a sneak peek of the project, Protagonist Pictures has joined forces with us for global distribution and will showcase special clips to potential buyers during the upcoming American Film Market.

Lionsgate, a partner in the project’s development along with the London-based studio Nevision, has acquired the U.K. distribution rights for the family drama that was filmed in Scotland.

In “Glenrothan,” Donal Cumming, who’s been residing in Chicago for 35 years, is compelled to go back to the Scottish Highlands due to a family matter. There, he encounters his older brother Sandy (Cox), with whom he hasn’t seen eye-to-eye for quite some time. Sandy is on the verge of losing their family’s whisky distillery if Donal doesn’t step in and take over. This situation compels the siblings to revisit old wounds and uncover the truth behind Donal’s decision to abandon Glenrothan all those years ago.

I’m associated with the production of “Glenrothan,” a film brought to life by creative minds like Cox, Neil Zeiger, Crystine Zhang (“Prisoner’s Daughter,” “Lee”), Phin Glynn (“Argentina 1985,” “Kill The Jockey”), Nic Crum (“Book of Love”) and James Cabourne, along with Vladimir Zemtsov (“Club Zero”). This film is a joint effort between Nevision and Blazing Griffin Pictures, in collaboration with Screen Scotland, Oval-5, Gold Rush Pictures, Head Gear, Infinity Hill and Lionsgate.

David Bishop, CEO of Protagonist, praises ‘Glenrothan’ as a heartfelt, humorous, and potent tale that explores universal themes of family and legacy amidst Scotland’s breathtaking landscapes and the world of whisky. He highlights Brian, who demonstrates his skill both on and off-screen, and the equally impressive Alan Cumming. In anticipation, they will unveil exclusive footage of this unique film at the upcoming AFM.

As a movie reviewer, I must admit that working on “Glenrothan,” Brian’s heartfelt ode to Scotland, has been an absolute joy. Under the skilled guidance of Neil Zeiger, our remarkable cast, featuring Alan, Shirley, and Alexandra, delivered outstanding performances. The film is a universal tale, expertly directed by Brian, that resonates with audiences worldwide due to its brilliant storytelling, stunning visuals, and exceptional acting. I wholeheartedly believe that “Glenrothan” will leave viewers spellbound and eager for more.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that my upcoming movie lineup is quite exceptional. It features “Kill the Jockey,” directed by Luis Ortega, which has been selected for Venice, TIFF, and San Sebastian film festivals and is Argentina’s official contender for the 2025 Academy Awards. I also can’t wait to see Samir Oliveros’ TIFF production, “The Luckiest Man in America,” starring the talented Paul Walter Hauser, who has won both Emmy and Golden Globe awards.
