Fantasy is a hugely popular genre, and we’ve seen it brought to life in many movies, TV series, and books. Now, bestselling author Brandon Sanderson has successfully adapted one of his works, despite previously believing streaming services weren’t the right fit.
The popular author, known for many bestselling novels, is finally bringing his expansive Cosmere universe to television and film. He’s planning a movie adaptation and The Stormlight Archive is being developed as a TV series. In a recent video on his YouTube channel, the author shared the reasons behind his decision to allow adaptations of his work.
Apple TV Was the Best Place for Brandon Sanderson
Apple TV has become a major destination for science fiction fans, offering popular shows like Severance, Foundation, Silo, and For All Mankind, among others. The platform has also successfully adapted several bestselling novels into critically acclaimed hits.
Sanderson explained that he met with several studios and spoke directly with their leaders. He was impressed with all of them, noting they thoroughly researched his work and could discuss his novels with real understanding.
Sanderson said this was the toughest decision he’s faced regarding Mistborn, as each studio presented a compelling proposal.
He explained that he ultimately chose to work with Apple, and his role under the agreement is to lead the development of the Cosmere—essentially, to be the creative force behind it, much like Kevin Feige is for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Sanderson admitted he feels a bit overwhelmed, as his initial task is to choose the producer and then the directors for the series. He hopes to have a substantial update within the next two months, including details on how the screenwriting is progressing.
The author revealed in February 2025 that several studios had made appealing offers to turn The Stormlight Archive into a TV series, but he initially believed it wasn’t the right moment. He was concerned because recent fantasy adaptations like Rings of Power and Wheel of Time hadn’t performed as well as he’d expected, and Shadow and Bone was canceled after two seasons despite a strong start. He felt streaming services were still struggling to successfully produce epic fantasy. Fortunately, Apple TV convinced him otherwise.
Project Hail Mary Gave Brandon Sanderson Faith in His Adaptation
Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi movie, Project Hail Mary, continues to be a success, earning over $500 million in theaters. Critics have praised the film, calling it an excellent adaptation of the source material.
The author recently posted a review of the popular sci-fi movie on his channel, and he really loved it, especially because the book it’s based on is one of his favorites from the last two decades. He explained that, as someone currently writing a screenplay based on his own book, he has a deeper appreciation for well-done adaptations.
Mistborn doesn’t have a release date.
