As a gamer who grew up in the late ’90s and early 2000s, the news of a new Backyard Sports game has sent me back to my childhood days. I remember the endless hours spent playing these games with friends, creating our own teams, and competing in tournaments that seemed more exciting than any professional league.
This year, Playground Productions and Mega Cat Studios declared the reemergence of the Backyard Sports series. The process started with the refurbishing of Backyard Baseball ’97, which was released in October. Even though more remasters are planned, Playground and Mega Cat have disclosed that they’re also working on a completely new Backyard Sports game.
Further details about the upcoming Backyard Sports game, such as which sport it focuses on, were left undisclosed in a recent press release. Mega Cat Studios was announced as the developer of this title, promising to feature all the original characters along with some new ones. The announcement also hinted at preserving the comedy, diversity, accessibility, and fun that made the initial games enduring classics. It remains uncertain whether the new game will exclusively be released on PC or if it will also be available for consoles.
The upcoming Backyard Sports game hasn’t been given a release date yet, but we can expect the next retro remaster to drop soon. As for Backyard Soccer ’98, it’s already on Steam’s wishlist and is set to launch on November 27. In this game, you’ll find six-versus-six matches between the Backyard Sports kids, with a full team of eight kids per side. You can opt for casual pick-up games or dive into League Play, where your team competes in divisional play before advancing to the Astonishingly Shiny Cup of All Cups Tournament.
In October, it was announced that ‘Backyard Soccer ’98’ would be making a comeback, along with four other remasters from the series’ past. The other titles in this lineup are ‘Backyard Football ’99’, ‘Backyard Basketball ’01’, ‘Backyard Baseball ’01’, and ‘Backyard Hockey ’02’. As of now, no specific release dates have been set for these games, but their wishlist pages are live on Steam.
