As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the evolution of Hollywood and its stars, and Brad Pitt is no exception. Having grown up idolizing the likes of Steve McQueen and Paul Newman, I must admit that Brad has more than held his own in the pantheon of great actors.
2022 saw Brad Pitt making news as he expressed to GQ magazine that his acting days might be nearing an end, referring to it as the “final stretch” of his career. This statement led to speculation about him retiring, but in reality, that’s not what he intended. Now, in a new GQ interview with George Clooney, Pitt reiterated this sentiment, but it doesn’t mean he’s completely leaving the acting world behind. Instead, it seems he’s planning to take things a bit slower.
“Pitt stated that he’s essentially following the same path, feeling the same way about it. He’s mainly focusing on cherishing the people dear to him and simply enjoying life.”
Brad Pitt clarified his “last legs” statement by saying, “I was referring to stages in a career. You see, leaving the comfort of the Ozarks is like starting out on a journey – it’s full of discovery, excitement, and challenges. It can be thrilling, difficult, and everything in between. When you make it into the big leagues, it transforms into a game of duties and obligations. Yet, it also offers opportunities, joy, and collaborating with respected peers. Now, I’m talking about these final years – what will they hold?”
“It appears my parents are similarly experiencing what George described, as their bodies become more delicate in their 80s. However, there’s Frank Gehry, an inspiring figure at 95, still creating remarkable art and cherishing his loved ones. I believe this combination of staying creative and loving life is the secret to maintaining vitality.”
As a film enthusiast, I’ve come to understand that a long-lasting career in this industry is largely about evolving with the times. In my experience, if you choose to stick with the same character you were when you were 35 and opt for a softer focus, chances are the phone will stop ringing. However, if you’re open to stepping back a bit on the call sheet and taking on intriguing character roles, then there’s a good chance you can continue working in this fascinating field.
As a dedicated cinephile, I can attest to Brad Pitt’s enduring status as a leading man in Tinseltown. Beyond collaborating with Clooney on the upcoming “Wolfs,” Pitt is gearing up for a grand global release of the Apple-supported Formula 1 racing drama, “F1,” slated for 2025. When he made his “last legs” remark, it was Quentin Tarantino, director of my films “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Inglourious Basterds,” who expressed sorrow that if Pitt were to retire, the film industry would be deprived of “one of the last remaining giants of the silver screen.”
“I find him to be an extraordinary individual, much like a unique star,” I remarked about Pitt back then. “To put it simply, I believe there’s no accurate way to define this quality because it’s as elusive as starlight. During our work on ‘Inglourious Basterds,’ I noticed it. When Brad was on screen, I didn’t feel like a camera operator peering through the viewfinder. Instead, I felt like a moviegoer, immersed in the story. His presence within the confines of the frame had that captivating effect.”
Beginning September 27, you can watch “Wolfs” streaming on Apple TV+. A week prior, from September 20, it will also have a theatrical release. For an in-depth look at the actors featured in the movie, head to GQ’s website to read their latest cover story.
