Boyz II Men Movie Biopic and Documentary in the Works (EXCLUSIVE)

As a cinephile who has witnessed the evolution of R&B music over the past few decades, I am beyond thrilled about the upcoming Boyz II Men biopic! Having grown up listening to their soulful harmonies and watching them dominate the charts, it’s heartwarming to see them finally getting the recognition they deserve on the big screen.

Notable R&B ensemble Boyz II Men are working on a movie biography, detailing their 30-year journey that produced chart-topping songs like “End of the Road”, “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday”, “On Bended Knee”, “One Sweet Day” and “Motownphilly”.

Four-time Grammy winners Boyz II Men have teamed up with production and financial firms Compelling Pictures and Primary Wave for the creation of a narrative movie. The band’s members, Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Wanya Morris, will serve as executive producers on this project. Additionally, Compelling Pictures is set to initiate work on a comprehensive documentary focusing on Boyz II Men’s reign during the 1990s and 2000s, along with their enduring success in current times.

Nathan Morris, speaking for the group, stated that they’ve been seeking compatible partners who can grasp their narrative and are eager to share it extensively. He expressed that Denis and Jeff from Compelling Pictures ‘got’ them right from the start.

Filmmakers such as Denis O’Sullivan from Compelling Pictures (known for “Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Jeff Kalligheri (“I Wanna Dance With Somebody”) are currently in preliminary discussions with screenwriters and directors, and they are actively pushing forward the development of a film. This movie has an advantage due to the band’s collection of popular songs.

1991 saw Boyz II Men launch their career with the hit album “Cooleyhighharmony,” which topped the charts and went on to establish them as the best-selling R&B group ever, with over 60 million albums sold globally. Currently touring, they recently concluded a three-night sellout at the Hollywood Bowl – their first headlining performance at this prestigious venue, having previously opened shows there during the early stages of their career.

O’Sullivan and Kalligheri expressed their immense pride in being part of a project that shares the unheard story of Boyz II Men, having grown close to them over the past few years. They are eager to portray the camaraderie, struggles, laughter, and tears that have been an integral part of the group’s journey towards unprecedented success. They believe the worldwide audience will enjoy a captivating tale filled with humor, heartache, inspiration, and friendship – much like Boyz II Men’s music. As they put it, ‘Doom-doom-doom-da-da…’

Additionally, the movie is being made by Larry Mestel (from “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”), who’s working under Primary Wave; Joe Mulvihill, representing the Mulvi Group; and Jeremy M. Rosen (from “King Ivory”) at Roxwell Films.

According to Metsel, Boyz II Men are a highly influential band of their generation. They stand out as one of the rare groups who cross genre and medium barriers. Primary Wave is excited to deepen its collaboration with the band and anticipates crafting an enduring narrative with Joe, Jeremy, and Compelling that will resonate with future generations and reintroduce the band to a fresh youth audience.

Speaking as their manager, Mulvihill shared: “Having worked with them for over two decades, I’ve witnessed the ups, downs, and the raw human emotions. I believe the public will find it fascinating to catch a glimpse of what happens backstage.

Besides Boyz II Men members Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Wanya Morris, the executive producers of this project are also Ori Allon, Dennis Casali, and Steven Garcia.
