As a seasoned movie critic with a keen eye for emotional storytelling and a heart for those who bravely face adversity, I find myself deeply moved by Danielle Fishel‘s courageous journey. Her openness about her breast cancer diagnosis at 43 years old is not just a testament to her resilience, but also a powerful reminder of the importance of regular health screenings.
On a recent episode of her “Pod Meets World” podcast, actress Danielle Fishel, known for her role in “Boy Meets World,” shared that she was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 43.
“She shared during the August 19th broadcast that she’s been diagnosed with DCIS, or Ductal carcinoma in situ, a type of breast cancer. This condition is extremely early and classified as stage zero.”
Fishel further clarified that she had been diagnosed with a high-grade Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) with micro-invasive characteristics, and she intends to undergo surgery to get rid of it.
She mentioned that she’s been faced with numerous choices over the past few days. At first, she intended to inform only her immediate family and friends about it, but kept it secret from everyone else. She was inclined to endure in solitude and tough it out, revealing her situation only after she had overcome it. However, Fishel decided to change her course of action following exposure to Glennon Doyle’s writings, which advocate that women should assist others during the difficult phases or “messy middle” of a struggle rather than waiting until they have emerged victorious from the experience.
Fishel promptly scheduled her annual mammogram as soon as she got the reminder text, which allowed her to catch the DCIS early.
“Fishel expressed that they discovered it so remarkably early which puts me at ease. I want to spread the word because I believe it could inspire others. If your appointment is due, or even if it’s your first time, don’t hesitate to go. And if you can, find out if you have cancer at its earliest stage, stage 0.”
She mentioned that she’s consulting with various doctors such as oncologists, radiation experts, and hormone therapists to decide on the next course of action. However, she tried to ease people’s concerns by expressing her confidence in her well-being. She also hinted at potential work disruptions; for instance, Fishel has been directing three episodes of NBC’s “Lopez vs. Lopez” lately.
Rider Strong and Will Friedle, her fellow stars from “Boy Meets World” alongside Fishel, were among the initial individuals she shared her news with, right after her own family.
“Friedle assured you, ‘We care deeply about you, and you can count on us.’ Any help you require, we’re readily available. ‘Rest assured, everything will work out, though there may be tough times ahead,’ Friedle added, ‘and during those moments, remember we’re by your side.'”
