Box Office: ‘Twisters’ Aims to Stir Up $55 Million Debut

As a movie critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of blockbuster sequels trying to recapture the magic of their predecessors. With “Twisters,” the long-awaited follow-up to the iconic 1996 disaster epic, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia tinged with apprehension.

“Twisters” may do some damage at the box office.

The movie “Twisters,” a follow-up to the 1996 disaster film “Twister” and directed by Lee Isaac Chung, is projected to earn around $50 million to $55 million during its opening weekend in approximately 4,000 North American cinemas. In this film, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos portray storm chasers who encounter their greatest challenge when numerous tornadoes collide over central Oklahoma.

The production cost of “Twisters” amounted to $155 million. In order for Universal’s investors to recoup this substantial investment, the movie needs to attract a wide global audience. Warner Bros., which is handling the international distribution, has so far earned $11.5 million from 38 territories. The film is set to debut in Europe over the weekend, including major markets such as France, Germany, Italy, and the UK.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but reminisce about the groundbreaking 1996 film “Twister.” Starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as daring meteorologists on a mission to tame the century’s strongest tornado, this movie left an indelible mark on me and audiences alike. It was an unforgettable experience that became the second-biggest box office success of its year and earned two esteemed Oscar nominations.

Last year at this time, there was a nationwide craze for “Barbenheimer.” However, the summer box office had a sluggish start in 2023. Nevertheless, it’s picking up now. Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” has been the most successful film this year with earnings of over $1.348 million worldwide. Universal and Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4” also contributed significantly with a global revenue of $434 million. Neon’s horror movie “Longlegs” was an unexpected success, earning $22.6 million in its debut and ranking among the highest-grossing independent releases. Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine,” featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, is set to release on July 26 and is expected to maintain the positive trend into August.
