Box Office: ‘Trap’ Makes $2.2 Million in Previews

As a seasoned film critic with a penchant for suspenseful thrillers and a soft spot for M. Night Shyamalan’s enigmatic storytelling, I must admit, my anticipation for “Trap” was palpable. However, after witnessing the colossal box office success of Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine,” I find myself somewhat apprehensive about this weekend’s offerings.

Director M. Night Shyamalan is springing his latest “Trap.”

M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film, featuring Josh Hartnett portraying a serial killer caught in a police trap during a pop concert with his daughter, raked in $2.2 million at the box office during its initial screenings.

The upcoming thriller is projected to earn between $15 million and $20 million over the weekend, however, it won’t stand a chance against last week’s box office giant, Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine”. This Marvel blockbuster is on course to increase its earnings by an estimated $75 million to $95 million in its second week. This represents a decrease of about 55% to 65%, following its record-breaking opening weekend of $211 million, which was the highest grossing weekend this year. It also broke the record for an R-rated opening and is expected to reign supreme once more this week.

Warner Bros.’ film titled “Trap” presents the story of Cooper (Hartnett), a father, who along with his teenage daughter Riley (Donoghue), attends a sold-out concert for renowned singer Lady Raven (portrayed by Saleka, Shyamalan’s daughter). In true M. Night Shyamalan style, it is gradually unveiled that Cooper is a notorious serial killer known as The Butcher, and the concert turns out to be a clever police strategy to apprehend him. The ensemble cast includes Kid Cudi, Hayley Mills, Tim Russ, Alison Pill, and others.

In its third weekend, Universal’s movie “Twisters” is expected to generate earnings between $17 million and $19 million, while facing competition. On the other hand, Sony’s family-friendly film “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” starring Zachary Levi, is set to debut this weekend with projected earnings of $6 million to $7 million, having made $725,000 during previews.
