Box Office: ‘Thunderbolts’ Nears $275 Million Globally, ‘Minecraft’ and ‘Sinners’ Notch Major Milestones

What kind of staying power will “Thunderbolts” have at the box office?

After the second weekend of its release, “Thunderbolts” has been earning a lot of attention, pulling in $34 million overseas and an additional $67.1 million worldwide. Compared to recent Marvel Cinematic Universe films such as “Captain America: Brave New World,” “The Marvels,” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which saw significant drops in subsequent showings and struggled to turn a profit, “Thunderbolts” is currently performing much stronger. However, it’s important to note that “Thunderbolts” was produced at a cost of $180 million, with marketing expenses adding an additional $100 million or more. Given that theater owners keep half of the ticket sales, “Thunderbolts” needs to have a prolonged run in cinemas to cover its production and marketing costs.

The movie titled “Thunderbolts” has garnered more favorable reviews and positive word-of-mouth than its counterparts in the comic book series. Experts believe this will prolong its stay on the big screen, as it won’t encounter direct competition until “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” arrives during Memorial Day weekend. So far, “Thunderbolts” has earned $143 million internationally and $128.5 million domestically, totaling a worldwide gross of $272.2 million. Major contributors to this box office success include the United Kingdom ($15.5 million), China ($13.8 million), and Mexico ($11.2 million).

In another part of the world, “The Minecraft Film” made a significant mark at the box office by exceeding $900 million in ticket sales. This Warner Bros. production, an adaptation of the popular video game and starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, has earned approximately $500.6 million internationally and a total of $909.6 million to date. At this point, it is the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the year.

The movie “Sinners” continues to perform exceptionally well at the box office, having earned a total of $283.3 million worldwide after its fourth weekend. However, it’s not as popular in international markets, with a current total of $68.9 million. But the strong interest in North America, where “Sinners” has become a hit with an impressive $214.4 million, is more than compensating for this gap.
