Neon’s horror-comedy film “The Monkey” is off to a robust start during its opening weekend, yet it’s expected to come in second place at the box office, trailing behind Disney’s “Captain America: Brave New World,” which remains popular but faces a significant drop in ticket sales during its second weekend.
The movie titled ‘The Monkey’ earned approximately $5.8 million from showings in around 3,200 theaters over Friday and previews. This places it as Neon’s second-largest opening weekend to date, trailing only director Osgood Perkins’ previous horror film, ‘Longlegs,’ from last summer. Critics have given positive reviews for this new release, but ticket buyers have shown a somewhat divided response; Cinema Score records a grade of ‘C+.’ Grades like these are common among horror films, but it’s worth noting that ‘Longlegs’ also received the same mediocre score before going on to achieve a solid 3.31 times multiplier during its opening weekend.
Based on its opening weekend performance alone, “The Monkey” is off to a strong start. With a production cost of approximately $10 million, this film looks set to earn a sizeable sum in cinemas, potentially leading to significant profits. Meanwhile, Perkins and Neon’s following project, “Keeper,” is scheduled for release in October. In contrast to his previous works, “The Monkey” represents a humorous shift for Perkins, as it brings to life a Stephen King tale about two brothers (played by Theo James) who witness a sinister toy monkey causing the deaths of those around them.
Despite raking in $100 million during its opening weekend over the President’s Day holiday, “Captain America: Brave New World” didn’t quite earn the label of a box office triumph yet. The reviews have generally been unfavorable and it received a less than stellar grade of “B-” from the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Cinema Score, leading to much anticipation about its second weekend performance in light of lackluster audience buzz.
The “Captain America” comeback earned an additional $7.2 million on Friday, suggesting it won’t shatter the MCU record of a 78% drop set by “The Marvels” in November 2023. On the other hand, “Brave New World” may experience a decline similar to that of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which opened during Presidents’ Day weekend last year before dropping 70% in its second week. If “Quantumania” is any indication, it would be disappointing if “Brave New World” follows suit with a steep decrease.
Sony’s movie “Paddington in Peru” ranked third over the weekend, bringing in an additional $1.5 million on Friday and predicting a total of $6.5 million for this week (representing a 48% decline from its first weekend). The StudioCanal production is looking hopeful to reach a domestic total of around $25 million within its first 10 days in cinemas, which matches the pace set by “Paddington 2” during its second weekend back in 2017.
Universal’s “Dog Man” movie has made $1.3 million on its first day and is projected to earn around $5.7 million during its fourth weekend. This indicates a potential decrease of about 41%. By the end of this weekend, the film’s total domestic gross could reach approximately $78 million.
In its second weekend, the Chinese blockbuster “Ne Zha 2” held onto fifth place, earning approximately $2.8 million. However, this figure represents a 63% drop compared to its initial showing, suggesting that its U.S. box office performance is modest at best. It’s important to note that in its home country, the film has already surpassed the billion-dollar mark, making it the highest-grossing animated movie ever produced and securing a spot among the top 10 all-time global box office earners. Consequently, this domestic gross doesn’t quite add up to the icing on the cake – more like a single nut in comparison.
Stepping into the realm of cinematic critique, I’m excitedly sharing my thoughts on Lionsgate’s latest offering, “The Unbreakable Boy,” starring Zachary Levi. This emotionally charged drama has finally seen the light of day, more than three years after its initial planned release. Despite a bit of a rocky road to the big screen, it’s now ready to captivate audiences in over 1,687 theaters, aiming for a $2.4 million weekend box office haul.
