Box Office: ‘Sonic 3’ Leads With $7.5 Million as Timothee Chalamet’s ‘A Complete Unknown’ Unwraps $1.4 Million on Christmas Eve

As a seasoned movie critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say, the holiday season has always been a fascinating time to dissect the cinematic landscape. The latest installment in the Sonic saga, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” is off to a roaring start, leaving its competition in the dust. However, it’s the newcomers that truly pique my interest, especially the Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” outpaced the box office competition on Christmas Eve.

The movie earned approximately $7.5 million at North American theaters on Tuesday. Predictions suggest that “Sonic 3” could generate around $50 million from Wednesday to Sunday. To date, this animated film featuring a blue, speedy anthropomorphic character has garnered a total of $60 million domestically. It will be released internationally on Christmas Day.

Disney’s movie “Mufasa: The Lion King” earned an additional $7.1 million on Tuesday, bringing its North American total to $49.6 million and its global earnings above $150 million. Predicted to earn around $45 million over the five-day holiday period, the prequel to “The Lion King” is performing well.

During the holiday season, three fresh contenders will enter the box office competition: “A Complete Unknown,” a biopic about Bob Dylan produced by Searchlight, a modern adaptation of “Nosferatu” from Focus Features, and an erotic thriller titled “Babygirl” from A24. These films are set to debut on Wednesday, although only the first two will have previews on Tuesday afternoon, reducing the number of daily screenings. With no major blockbuster like “Avatar,” “Star Wars,” or “Spider-Man” scheduled for release around Christmas, theater owners are hoping that holdovers from November such as “Moana 2,” “Wicked,” and “Gladiator II” will help boost revenues during this particularly busy period for moviegoing.

The film titled “A Complete Unknown,” featuring Timothee Chalamet portraying music and counterculture icon Bob Dylan, made approximately $1.4 million on Tuesday from 1,880 different theaters. This includes screenings in Imax and Alamo Drafthouse venues during mid-December. James Mangold (“Walk the Line”) directed this movie, which is predicted to earn around $15 million from 2,500 locations over a five-day period. The film’s production cost is estimated to be between $60 million and $70 million, putting it in a tough position to achieve profitability. Fortunately, musical biopics have been doing well in theaters recently (examples include “Bob Marley: One Love,” “Elvis” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”), and Chalamet has solidified his status as a financially successful actor following the successes of “Wonka” and the upcoming “Dune: Part Two.

On Tuesday, “Nosferatu” was not screened in previews, instead being shown on certain Imax and 35mm screens. This classic horror film directed by Robert Eggers about a chilling vampire pursuing a tormented young woman is expected to generate the most initial revenue among new releases with an estimated $25 million over its first five days in cinemas. Starring Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, and Lily-Rose Depp, the movie carries a production budget of approximately $50 million. Its success will largely depend on maintaining audience interest throughout the holiday season to cover its costs.

“Babygirl,” featuring Nicole Kidman portraying a top-tier CEO involved in an affair with an intern, was not screened at previews on Tuesday. The film will officially debut in 2,100 theaters nationwide starting Wednesday and is projected to earn approximately $7 million by Sunday.

In the meantime, “Wicked” and “Moana 2” each earned approximately $3 million on Tuesday and are projected to make between $20 million and $22 million over the extended holiday weekend. “Wicked,” Universal’s take on the hit Broadway show, has already made close to $400 million in the U.S. and $577 million worldwide. On the other hand, “Moana 2,” initially intended for streaming, has been a huge success in cinemas, earning $366 million in the U.S. and a staggering $800 million globally.
