As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of cinematic exploration under my belt, I must say the upcoming weekend promises an intriguing mix of horror and drama. The anticipated sequel to “Smile,” titled “Smile 2,” seems poised to deliver another dose of chilling terror, following the success of its predecessor. With its low-cost production budget, it appears Paramount is once again aiming for a horror hit that could potentially surpass the box office performance of the original.
Cheer up moviegoers! The sequel to Paramount’s unexpected horror success, titled “Smile 2,” hits theaters this very weekend.
The movie penned and helmed by Parker Finn yet again, has raked in approximately $2.5 million during its Thursday pre-release screenings at the box office so far. Notably, the 2022 original film garnered about $2 million during its pre-releases in the first weekend of October last year.
The sequel titled ‘Smile 2’ is projected to generate between $20 million and $25 million in its initial weekend, with some estimates suggesting an even larger sum. The original film, initially intended for a streaming debut, opened to $22.6 million in 2022. However, it surprised everyone by turning into a hit, raking in $105 million domestically and a staggering $217 million worldwide by the end of its cinematic journey.
With a $28 million production cost, the upcoming horror movie “Smile 2” promises to be another budget-friendly success for Paramount. Building on the initial film’s chilling premise of a smile-triggering, malevolent force causing its victims to descend into madness and suicide, this sequel escalates the terror. Actress Naomi Scott portrays Skye Riley, a globally recognized pop star who falls victim to this evil entity. As she plans her comeback tour, Skye gradually loses sanity and starts perceiving hallucinations among her sea of admirers. The ensemble cast also features Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage, Kyle Gallner, Dylan Gelula, Raul Castillo, Peter Jacobsen, Ray Nicholson, and others.
Additionally debuting this weekend is the film “Anora,” from directors Neon and Sean Baker. This intriguing drama revolves around a stripper who develops affection for the son of a Russian billionaire. The movie has already generated quite a buzz prior to the Oscars, and it will initially be screened in select theaters this weekend, with wider release scheduled later on.
