Box Office: Robert Pattinson’s ‘Mickey 17’ Makes $2.5 Million in Previews

The box office is welcoming back Robert Pattinson — a lot of him.

In “Mickey 17,” Robert Pattinson takes on a unique role, portraying several copies of the same character who meet untimely deaths, directed by the acclaimed filmmaker Bong Joon Ho (of “Parasite” fame). The R-rated sci-fi film, produced by Warner Bros., has already grossed $2.5 million at the box office during its Thursday previews.

The film “Mickey 17” is projected to earn between $18 million and $20 million domestically and $20 million to $25 million internationally this weekend. This would result in a global opening of approximately $40 million to $45 million. However, considering that the movie cost $118 million to produce, it will need to gross around $275 million to $300 million worldwide just to break even, which is quite a difficult target to reach.

According to Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7”, the upcoming film by director Bong, titled “Mickey 17”, is his first project since the critically acclaimed “Parasite” in 2019, which garnered several Academy Awards including best picture, director, original screenplay, and international feature. Robert Pattinson portrays Mickey Barnes, a worker destined for dangerous space missions to colonize distant planets. As part of his hazardous occupation, Mickey experiences lethal space conditions and is revived as a clone for the 17th time. However, an unexpected turn occurs when another clone of himself, Mickey 18, is accidentally created, violating the ship’s rule against cloning multiple versions of an individual. The ensemble cast of “Mickey 17” also includes Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo and others.

Due to minimal rivalry at the cinema, “Mickey 17” is expected to dominate the box office, surpassing Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World,” which has been showing in cinemas since Valentine’s Day.
