As a movie buff, I can’t help but marvel at Warner Bros.’ remarkable reign at the box office this April! The phenomenal success of “A Minecraft Movie” and “Sinners” has left everyone stunned, surpassing all our initial expectations!
Folie à Deux.
The box office revenue for ‘Minecraft: The Movie’ stands at a staggering $1.25 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2021 so far. Notably, major foreign earnings come from countries like the United Kingdom ($67.1 million), Germany ($33.7 million), Australia ($31.8 million), and Mexico ($28.4 million).
The movie titled “Sinners” has earned $39.1 million overseas and $161.6 million globally so far, despite a production budget of $90 million. Although it’s not performing exceptionally well at international box offices (with a drop of only 14% from the previous weekend), it’s maintaining its ticket sales. In North America, however, “Sinners” has made an impressive $45 million in its second week, which is quite unusual for films as it nearly matched its opening weekend earnings.
“Director Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners,’ filmed with Imax cameras, has been a powerful presence on premium screens. In just Imax theaters, the movie generated an additional $12.3 million globally over the weekend, bringing its total to $20.6 million. This box office revenue accounts for nearly one-fifth of the film’s entire earnings.”
Imax’s CEO, Rich Gelfond, commented that ‘Sinners’ is becoming a cultural sensation that people can’t miss, and the way Imax screens are spearheading this trend is similar to how ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Dune: Part Two’ have done recently. Ryan Coogler seems to have perfectly captured the current mood with this film.
In other locations, Disney demonstrated that “Star Wars” still packs a punch with “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.” This space opera prequel celebrated its 20th anniversary by reappearing in cinemas, earning an impressive $17 million from 34 different countries, such as Germany ($4.6 million), the U.K. ($2.3 million), and Mexico ($1.7 million). In addition to this foreign revenue, “Revenge of the Sith” brought in a domestic total of $25.2 million, resulting in a global weekend box office of approximately $42 million.
