Box Office: M. Night Shyamalan’s ‘Trap’ Targets $15 Million Debut, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ to Dominate Again

As a long-time movie enthusiast who has witnessed the ebb and flow of the cinematic landscape, I must say that this weekend’s box office battle seems to be a David and Goliath tale. M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap” is a promising contender, but it faces an uphill battle against Marvel’s unstoppable duo, Deadpool & Wolverine.

On Friday, M. Night Shyamalan’s movie “Trap” hits the big screen, but it may struggle to make an impact compared to the current box office king, the action-packed duo of Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

“The movie titled ‘Trap’ is projected to earn between $15 million and $20 million during its debut, potentially taking the second spot behind Universal’s blockbuster ‘Twisters.’ Starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, ‘Trap’ is expected to bring in an additional $17 million to $19 million in its third week. To date, ‘Twisters’ has earned $154 million domestically and $220 million worldwide. This weekend also sees the release of Sony’s family-friendly film ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon,’ which is forecasting a modest start of $6 million to $7 million.”

In its second weekend, even with two fresh additions, “Deadpool & Wolverine” are expected to maintain their box office dominance, albeit with a significant drop in ticket sales – between $75 million and $95 million. This decline comes from their record-breaking $211 million debut, which places the superhero sequel among the year’s most successful films, earning $235.8 million domestically and $496 million globally within a week of release. As more weeks pass, “Deadpool & Wolverine” are poised to surpass “Despicable Me 4” ($679 million) and “Dune: Part Two” ($711 million), eventually ranking as the second-biggest film of 2024, trailing only Disney’s “Inside Out 2,” which currently holds the title for the year’s highest-grossing film with $1.5 billion worldwide.

“Trap” stars Josh Hartnett as a cunning serial killer who deceives his teenage daughter into attending a pop concert, unaware that the event has been orchestrated by the police for his capture. M. Night Shyamalan’s recent production, released in 2023 as “Knock at the Cabin,” garnered $14 million on its opening weekend and concluded its box office run with a global total of $54.7 million. If “Trap” doesn’t perform exceptionally well, it may be considered one of Shyamalan’s lesser-known works in his career. Interestingly, the director behind “The Sixth Sense” and “Signs” chooses to finance his films independently and maintain low budgets, ensuring they don’t need large sums of money to generate profits. Warner Bros. is handling the distribution for “Trap.”

As a horror movie enthusiast, I’m eagerly anticipating the release of “Trap” this year, as it seems poised to elevate the genre that, let’s admit, hasn’t been particularly stellar so far. However, Neon’s surprising success with their low-budget production “Longlegs,” which has grossed an impressive $58.6 million in North America and counting, gives me hope. Unfortunately, other recent horror releases like “The First Omen” ($53 million globally), the chilling “Night Swim” from Blumhouse ($54 million globally), the vampire-themed “Abigail” ($42 million globally) and Lionsgate’s suspenseful “Imaginary” ($39 million globally) haven’t resonated with audiences as much as I would have hoped.

In a spin on the classic children’s book “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” Zachary Levi portrays a character who wields a magical pen that makes his sketches come alive. This blend of live-action and animation is set to debut amidst tough rivalry from established hits like “Inside Out 2” and “Despicable Me 4.” With a production budget of $40 million, Sony hopes that “Harold” will strike a chord with family viewers for the rest of the summer season.

As a dedicated cinephile, despite the blockbuster hits of “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine,” this year’s domestic box office performance is lagging behind by 17%, as per Comscore’s latest report. Fortunately, upcoming fall releases like “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Joker: Folie a Deux” hold promise for bridging the gap between the current figures and those of 2023.
