Box Office: ‘Joker 2’ Makes $7 Million in Previews, Down From Original Movie

As a longtime fan of both Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, I am beyond excited to witness the magical chemistry between these two extraordinary artists in “Joker: Folie a Deux.” Having grown up with the Batman universe and being captivated by the original Joker’s gritty, raw portrayal, I can hardly wait to see how this sequel will push the boundaries even further.

The box office is no laughing matter this weekend, because Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker is back.

“Joker: Two Fools for Crazy,” the follow-up to the Academy Award-nominated DC Comics movie “Joker,” will hit theaters this weekend. So far, it has earned $7 million in Thursday previews. Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as the deranged Batman antagonist, and this time he’s teamed up with Lady Gaga, who portrays the equally mad Harley Quinn.

In an effort to match the impressive success of the 2019 original, “Folie a Deux” will face a daunting task. The initial release, “Joker,” grossed a staggering $1.07 billion worldwide on a mere $65 million investment, whereas its follow-up comes with a hefty $200 million budget and hasn’t garnered as much critical acclaim as the original. Unlike the first film which earned $13.3 million in Thursday previews en route to a strong $96.2 million opening weekend, “Folie a Deux” is projected to bring in a more modest $50 million to $65 million within the same timeframe.

The sequel to “Joker,” titled “Joker: Madness Two,” debuted at the Venice Film Festival, yet it failed to match the significant impression left by the 2019 release of “Joker,” which took home the prestigious Golden Lion. Unlike its predecessor, a hard-hitting character study that earned Phoenix an Oscar for best actor, “Madness Two” takes a different route and offers a dark musical and romantic tale co-created by Joker and Harley. With Lady Gaga’s singing talents showcased, the film also broadened its ensemble cast to include Brendan Gleeson, Harry Lawtey, Catherine Keener, among others.

This weekend, another film by Lionsgate titled “White Bird” is set to premiere. This movie serves as both a prequel and sequel to the 2017 hit “Wonder,” starring Jacob Tremblay. Predictions suggest it will have a modest opening with only single-digit box office earnings.
