Box Office: ‘Blink Twice’ and ‘The Crow’ to Close Strong Summer Movie Season With a Whimper

As a cinephile with decades of movie-going under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation and nostalgia as we approach another weekend at the box office. The arrival of “Blink Twice” and “The Crow” reboot feels like a throwback to the days when summer was filled with new releases vying for our attention.

Welcome to the dog days of summer.

Over the upcoming weekend, I’m expecting a slow box office performance due to two fresh releases: Zoe Kravitz’s psychological thriller “Blink Twice” and the reboot of “The Crow,” starring Bill Skarsgård. “Blink Twice” is anticipating earnings between $7 million and $8 million from approximately 3,000 cinemas, while “The Crow” reboot aims to gather around $6 million to $9 million from about 2,500 theaters. As a fan eagerly waiting for these films, I’m curious to see how they will fare at the box office!

Even though there are two new releases, “Alien: Romulus” from last weekend, rated R, is expected to compete for the number one position on the North American box office charts this week against “Deadpool & Wolverine.” “Romulus,” in its second week, is projected to earn between $16 million and $19 million, a significant drop of 55% to 60% from its opening weekend’s impressive $41 million. On the other hand, “Deadpool & Wolverine” aims for a similar range of $16 million to $18 million in its fifth week in theaters. So far this year, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Marvel’s superhero adventure, has made an impressive $546 million domestically and over $1.14 billion globally.

“Compared to ‘Blink Twice’ and ‘The Crow’, the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s hit novel, ‘It Ends With Us’, is expected to outperform in its third week, potentially earning between $10 million and $12 million. To date, ‘It Ends With Us’ has garnered a staggering $100 million domestically and an impressive $187 million worldwide.”

“In her first directorial venture, Kravitz, recognized for her work in ‘Fantastic Beasts,’ ‘The Batman,’ ‘Kimi’ directed by Steven Soderbergh, and ‘High Fidelity’ on Hulu, presents ‘Blink Twice.’ This R-rated psychological thriller has garnered mostly favorable reviews (81% on Rotten Tomatoes). The story revolves around a cocktail waitress played by Naomi Ackie who encounters a tech billionaire, portrayed by Channing Tatum, Kravitz’s fiancé. Their journey to his private island for an extravagant party takes an ominous turn. With a $20 million budget, ‘Blink Twice’ should have a solid run in theaters even if it doesn’t see high box office numbers initially. In the U.S., Amazon MGM is responsible for distribution, while Warner Bros. handles the international rollout.”

Lionsgate is supporting a remake titled “The Crow,” a gritty modern take on the comic book-turned-1994 movie. Alexander Skarsgård portrays the lead character, The Crow, who is a slain musician brought back to life to seek vengeance for his own death and that of his fiancée (FKA Twigs). With an R rating, this film reportedly cost $50 million to produce. If “The Crow” doesn’t surpass expectations, it will mark the second straight failure for Lionsgate following August’s “Borderlands.” This video game adaptation, featuring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Ariana Greenblatt, is one of the year’s biggest disappointments, earning only $13.6 million in North America and $18 million globally after two weeks in theaters.

Although “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Twisters,” and “Despicable Me 4” had a strong late-summer release, the total domestic earnings are still lagging 16% compared to last year and 28% behind the pre-pandemic year of 2019. These upcoming August releases may not significantly narrow that gap, according to Comscore’s data.
