Box Office: ‘Alien: Romulus’ Hatches $18 Million Opening Day

As a seasoned moviegoer and avid follower of the sci-fi genre, I must say that the weekend box office results have left me rather thrilled! The success of “Alien: Romulus” is not just a victory for Disney, but a testament to the enduring appeal of the “Alien” series. Seven years may have passed since the last entry, but it seems that the franchise’s allure remains undiminished.

In 3,885 locations, including previews, “Alien: Romulus” amassed approximately $18 million on its first day, which is a promising sign that it could surpass studio estimates and earn around $40 million during its opening weekend. This strong start is further bolstered by screenings in Imax and other premium large-format theaters. The success of “Alien: Romulus” adds to Disney’s summer box office dominance, with hits like “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Inside Out 2” already securing the studio’s reign over the cinemas.

The project titled “Romulus,” initially slated for its premiere on Hulu, was later moved by Disney to a theatrical release prior to filming commencement, under the guidance of director Fede Alvarez. With almost five decades behind it, the “Alien” series remains a highly respected name among horror and sci-fi enthusiasts, who are eagerly anticipating its opening weekend. The franchise’s recent installments, prequels “Prometheus” and “Alien: Covenant,” saw the original film’s director Ridley Scott revisit the property. “Prometheus” grossed $51 million in 2012, eventually amassing a total of $403 million worldwide; while “Covenant,” released in 2017, saw a decrease in earnings, debuting at $36 million and ending with a global box office of $240 million.

Seven years on, the R-rated series has been revitalized by “Romulus,” offering a breath of fresh air. This new addition came with a reduced budget compared to its predecessors, with production and marketing costs amounting to $80 million. Compared to the financial burden of the last two installments, this is significantly lighter. If the overseas success trend for “Romulus” persists, it will provide a sturdy base for a successful cinema run. This is particularly promising given the positive reviews and enthusiastic audience reception (Cinema Score awarded it a B+ – the highest grade since James Cameron’s “Aliens,” and an impressive result for a horror film, which typically score lower).

As a lifelong fan of the Alien franchise, I’m genuinely excited about the upcoming prequel movie, set between the events of “Alien” and “Aliens.” Having grown up watching Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley battle against the terrifying Xenomorphs, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia when thinking about the original films. However, the introduction of a new cast in this mid-quel is intriguing, as it presents an opportunity to explore fresh storylines and characters within the same universe.

Disney can claim the runner-up position, as “Deadpool & Wolverine” from Marvel has been dethroned from its number one spot on domestic box office charts after four weeks in theatres. The superhero team-up movie made $8.1 million on Friday, a decrease of only 48% compared to last week’s earnings. The adult-oriented comedy has maintained its audience appeal, raking in over $520 million in North America and over $1 billion globally. This week, it surpassed “Joker” to become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever made.

The drama starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni titled “It Ends With Us” is projected to finish in third place with earnings of $7.7 million on Friday. The film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s popular novel is showing a strong hold, predicting a 52% decrease from its initial weekend performance; it is expected to exceed a gross of $100 million in North America within the upcoming week – an impressive return on its production budget of $25 million.

The movie “Twisters,” produced by Universal, is maintaining its momentum in the top five earning positions, with an estimated three-day earnings of $9.2 million and a 39% decrease compared to the previous weekend’s figures. This Amblin production has now accumulated a domestic gross of over $230 million.

The fifth day sees the re-release of Henry Selick’s stop-motion classic “Coraline,” produced by Focus Features, marking its 15th anniversary with a remastered 3D version. Interestingly, both 3D and 2D versions are being screened. On its opening days in 1,564 theaters, it garnered an impressive $5.8 million, suggesting that it could surpass a $10 million gross within its first four days of release. This is significantly more than half of its initial $16.8 million earnings back in 2009, which is quite impressive for a film that’s 15 years old.
