Following over a decade in production, “A Minecraft Movie” has unearthed success and shined brightly at the box office. The video game adaptation by Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, after much anticipation, recorded an impressive $58 million on its first day from 4,263 North American theaters. This figure surpassed “Captain America: Brave New World’s” opening day earnings of $40.9 million, making it the highest opening day gross of 2025 thus far.
The film “A Minecraft Movie” is off to a fantastic beginning, placing it on track to surpass its initial estimates for a domestic opening weekend earnings of $70 million to $80 million. It’s looking likely that it will even reach triple-digit figures in its debut; the North American market hasn’t witnessed such a feat since “Moana 2” in November. Some predictions suggest that this blocky adventure movie could earn more than $150 million during its opening weekend, which would place it among the top 30 biggest domestic debuts ever recorded.
Despite receiving mostly negative reviews, the $150 million budgeted “A Minecraft Movie” has had a strong start, placing itself on track for blockbuster greatness. The audience’s response, as measured by Cinema Score, has been a B+ grade, suggesting positive interest from ticket buyers, although it falls slightly short of the A-range enjoyed by some highly successful fan-driven films. Notably, “A Minecraft Movie” is poised to become the second highest-grossing domestic release of the year, following its initial weekend in theaters, and it’s expected to quickly surpass No. 1, “Captain America 4,” which earned $197 million.
Minecraft, developed by Mojang, was initially launched in 2011 and, following its adaptation to numerous systems, has become the highest-selling video game globally, surpassed only by Tetris. Warner Bros. initiated the creation of a movie based on this low-fi sandbox title in 2014; Legendary joined as a co-producer in 2022, helping to bring a PG-rated version directed by Jared Hess into production. The film features an impressive cast that includes Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge.
As a movie critic, I’m excited to share that Fathom Events is releasing the second set of episodes for “The Chosen: Last Supper” this weekend. This Biblical adaptation by 5&2 Studios has been captivating audiences, and with the success of its first three episodes raking in $11 million over three days, I anticipate it will land in third place after earning $2.8 million across Friday and previews. The specialty banner has cleverly broken up Season 5 into three theatrical releases, with Episodes 4-6 being unveiled this week. The final two episodes will be screened next weekend to wrap up this extraordinary series. This is a must-watch for anyone interested in biblical stories told in an engaging and thought-provoking manner.
This weekend, “Hell of a Summer,” the first feature film by Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk, will be released in over 1,250 locations by Neon. While it’s not setting any records, the summer camp slasher managed to earn approximately $720,000 on its opening day. Industry predictions suggest that the indie film could gross around $1.7 million during its first weekend. Neon acquired the film following its debut at the Toronto Film Festival in 2023.
The Jason Statham film “A Working Man,” produced by Amazon MGM, topped the box office last weekend but is projected to fall to second place in its second week. Earning $1.9 million on its opening day, it’s estimated that the vigilante thriller will drop approximately 53% in its second frame, resulting in a total domestic gross of around $27.8 million within its first 10 days. Despite lagging slightly behind “The Beekeeper,” another collaboration between Statham and MGM, it’s still considered a strong performance for the film.
After earning $1.5 million on Friday, Disney’s “Snow White” has dropped significantly by 60% from its earnings one week ago, landing it in fourth place. Now in its third weekend of release, the live-action remake of the classic animated film has seen a swift decline in theater attendance following a disappointing initial showing. Its domestic gross currently stands at $72 million, and there’s a strong possibility it won’t reach even $100 million in North America – a worrying outcome for a Hollywood production that cost $250 million to make.
Universal’s film “The Woman in the Yard” climbs into the top five this week, raking in an additional $1.3 million on Friday. The grim Blumhouse thriller is anticipated to decrease by 54% during its second weekend, bringing in an estimated $4.3 million. By Sunday, its domestic total should reach approximately $16.5 million. Despite some seemingly negative audience reactions, the Jaume Collet-Serra production is performing steadily against a budget of $12 million.
