Bowen Yang Proposes ‘SNL’ Cast Should Be Able to Say ‘S—‘ and ‘F—‘ On Air ‘If We’re Dismantling the FCC Because of Trump’

Bowen Yang wants to add two more words to his “Saturday Night Live” scripts.

The cast member expressed on his podcast “Las Culturistas,” during the “I Don’t Think So, Honey” segment, that they should be allowed to use at least five instances each of ‘shits’ and ‘fucks’ on ‘SNL’ throughout a season. In this segment, he and co-host Matt Rogers, along with their guest, share a bold opinion or cultural viewpoint within a minute.

While seated across from Rogers and comedy legend Amy Poehler, who’s also known for her work on “SNL”, Yang mentioned a recent incident on the show. During a segment of “Weekend Update” by Ego Nwodim, an unintended audience outburst led to them shouting the word “shit”. Remarkably, it seemed that “SNL” managed to avoid any reprimand from the FCC for this potential infraction. Yang expressed his fondness for this instance as his all-time favorite moment in television history.

Yang points out that one limitation in our comedy on ‘SNL’ is not being able to use words like ‘sh*t’ and ‘fk’. This applies to shows like ‘Abbott,’ ‘Ghosts.’ We’re among the last network comedies left. Could we get an exception made for ‘SNL?'”

Or even more casually: “Yang notes that using words like ‘sh*t’ and ‘fk’ is a restriction in our comedy on ‘SNL’. Shows like ‘Abbott,’ ‘Ghosts.’ We’re among the last network comedies. Can we break the rule for ‘SNL’?

Yang argued that if the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is being dismantled due to Trump’s administration, one potential advantage could be the freedom to use words like ‘shit’ and ‘fuck’. He suggested this could elevate comedy by making it more raw and powerful.

Later on, Poehler suggests that NBC could generate revenue by allowing viewers to vote, similar to “American Idol,” on which characters can use certain swear words like “shit” and “fuck.” Meanwhile, Yang proposes they could establish a legal defense fund if necessary, by means of fundraising.

Rogers proposes that when Kenan Thompson, the longest-serving cast member, eventually departs from the show, he should be given the freedom to use any explicit language he desires during his final episode.

Poehler argues furthermore that the inability to swear actually creates comic tension. As she puts it, “You want it because you can’t have it.

Yang further clarifies that actors on “SNL” are allowed to use the word ‘ass’, but not ‘asshole’. They can also use ‘taint’ because it refers to a specific body part.
