Borderlands Movie's Massive Failure Detailed By Lionsgate Exec

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must confess that the Borderlands movie left me feeling like a vault hunter who had just encountered a malfunctioning loot chest – empty and disappointed.

Although the Borderlands film might not garner many accolades during the 2024 Oscar season, it seems destined to compete for the title of worst film at the Razzies. Critics have been merciless in their reviews, and its global box office earnings amounted to just $31 million within the first month. Recently, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer has spoken candidly about the movie’s failure, leaving no room for ambiguity.

As a gamer pouring over my latest quest, if something could potentially glitch or go awry, it certainly did. During those virtual conference calls with investors, I shared that the game sat untouched for far too long during the pandemic. In the making of the movie “Borderlands”, director Eli Roth assembled a remarkable ensemble of actors, including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ariana Greenblatt. As disclosed by Borderlands’ stunt coordinator Jimmy O’Dee, initially, Roth filmed Borderlands as an adult-oriented R-rated movie. Later on, under the supervision of Deadpool director Tim Miller, costly reshoots were carried out, ultimately turning it into a PG-13 film.

The reported global earnings of Borderlands were approximately $33 million, while its production budget was around $110-$120 million. Despite being considered a financial failure, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick emphasized the movie’s positive impact during a recent investors call. He suggested that the film boosted sales of the Borderlands video games noticeably. This increase might help the company, as they didn’t bear the film’s costs, since a theatrical sequel is unlikely to happen.
