Today, Devolver Digital unveiled both the trailer and playable demo for Mycopunk, the first title from developer Pigeons at Play. This mission-focused cooperative shooter takes cues from games such as Borderlands, Risk of Rain 2, Helldivers 2, among others. It’s known for its vibrant, frenetic gameplay that keeps your friends entertained while you briefly step away to grab a drink. You and those friends can dive into Mycopunk right now via the demo, but the Steam page hints at a 2025 release date, so it might not be long before you can explore the full game.

The moniker “Mycopunk” is derived from the fusion of fungal organisms and futuristic technology. Upon landing on a planet, you’ll gradually encounter alien fungi that have emerged from the earth, fortifying themselves with scrap metal and technological components for armor, weapons, and locomotion. To neutralize them effectively, you’ll need to aim tactically to expose vulnerable spots or sever limbs and appendages to hinder their progress and disarm them.

In the game called Mycopunk, there are diverse characters, each possessing unique skills; one with a jetpack, another with a glider. However, regardless of your chosen character, there’s an abundance of movement methods at your disposal, ranging from rail grinding to driving vehicles and mowing down adversaries. The creative freedom in maneuvering through the world is a perfect diversion for friends, providing them with a fun distraction during brief waits before the mission commences.

In a similar vein to the countless weapon modifications available in the Borderlands franchise, players have an abundance of customization options for their weapons. Morgan Park from PC Gamer described some of these enhancements during his preview playthrough. For instance, one upgrade transforms an empty magazine into a throwable explosive that inflicts greater damage as the ammo dwindles. Another mod gives players infinite ammunition, but prolonged firing causes self-damage over time. These ideas are far more intricate and captivating than simple traits like “deals fire damage” or “increases ammo,” which are quite common in other games.

While browsing the live stream on the Steam page for the game “Mycopunk“, I found myself at just the right moment. A team of four players had just accomplished an objective, resulting in a colossal laser being shot upwards, causing a distant explosion that looked like fireworks on the horizon. However, the explosion soon started growing larger and nearer, until what seemed to be meteors of flaming debris began falling all around them. Panicking, they called for an emergency evacuation by a drop ship to rescue them from the chaos.

The game titled “Mycopunk” appears fascinating as a cooperative play, and I’m eager to give it a go. Instead of avoiding the hilarity that arises from friends playing a disorganized game, it seems to thrive on it, even promoting it. You can add Mycopunk to your wishlist on Steam right now.
