Borderlands Franchise Sells 93 Million Copies as Borderlands 4 Nears Launch

2K, the publisher behind the popular Borderlands series, recently shared some financial figures. It appears that an astounding 93 million units of the Borderlands franchise have been sold!

That equals approximately ninety-three million adventurers, constantly on the hunt for treasures and bursting with witty remarks. With Borderlands 4 rapidly approaching its release, the excitement is only building faster and faster.

Fans exhibit a blend of cautious excitement, considering the series’ varying quality throughout its history. While Borderlands 2 stands as a timeless genre masterpiece, Borderlands 3, despite receiving some criticism, has been labeled as the fastest-selling title in the franchise.

Borderlands 4 has big shoes to fill

In a recent State of Play presentation, it was unveiled that Borderlands 4 is seeking atonement, as shown by the introduction of a fresh planet called Kairos. This planet teems with rebellion, boasts challenging vertical landscapes, and emphasizes genuine exploration. Notably, there will be no minimap available; only a compass to guide players on their journey.

The latest Vault Hunters offer extensive personalization, distinctive abilities, and, it’s said, genuine character development. Weapons now incorporate attributes from various weapon makers due to the “Licensed Components” system.

The tone is moving towards the witty, slightly sarcastic style similar to that in Borderlands 2. A fresh group of writers guarantees a more engaging and intelligent form of comedy.

To put it simply, the sales figures for Borderlands 3 are astonishingly high. As shown on page 16 of 2K’s 2025 investor presentation, this game has sold more than 22 million units, making it their swiftest seller to date. However, Borderlands 2 still holds the title for their top-selling game with over 30 million units sold.

In Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, we don’t have exact sales figures yet, but it seems clear enough. What’s encouraging is that about 40% of its player base are newcomers to the Borderlands series. This indicates that the franchise continues to attract new players.

2K and Take-Two view Borderlands as a crucial component in their financial strategy. It’s no longer just a looter-shooter; it’s a foundation stone. Financial presentations showcasing investment opportunities highlight it among the publisher’s top money makers, demonstrating strong faith in its upcoming major release.
