2024’s Borderlands film didn’t perform exceptionally well at cinemas, earning only $33 million, and it received a moderately cold response from critics too. Despite the movie underperforming both critically and financially, Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox, remains optimistic about future cross-media ventures.
To The Gamer, Pitchford expressed his willingness to consider another attempt if a fitting group of individuals and concepts align at the perfect time.
I believe in supporting talented individuals, whether they’re creators, artists, or entertainers, who wish to express themselves through Borderlands and have proven their ability to do so. Although we don’t always achieve our goals, it’s important to continue trying.
In his words, Pitchford noted that even The Beatles, a widely-acclaimed and adored band, didn’t always strike a chord perfectly with him – at least according to his personal taste.
He shared that he adores the Beatles and there’s plenty of their music, but sometimes he can’t bear to listen to some of it, finding it almost unbearable. However, instead of criticizing them for creating an unlistenable song, he suggested maintaining a positive attitude, encouraging them to continue making music as he said, “Even though you produced a difficult-to-listen-to song, don’t stop there – keep composing music.
In the same conversation, Pitchford shared that if he were the director of the Borderlands movie, it wouldn’t have been any better, in fact, it might have turned out significantly worse.
“I promise you, if I directed that movie, it’d be a disaster,” he said.
The Borderlands movie didn’t perform well at the box office, but luckily for Gearbox, financially speaking, the film was bankrolled by Lionsgate. According to Variety, it cost $120 million to produce the movie, with additional tens of millions spent on promotional efforts. When discussing the movie’s underwhelming performance, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer was frank about its impact on their company.
Feltheimer stated that things seemed to take a turn for the worse in almost every aspect. During the pandemic, the project was left unused for an extended period, and subsequent reshoots and the increase in interest rates pushed it beyond the protective boundaries of our traditional tight budgeting guidelines.
Although the film adaptation of Borderlands drew from a popular franchise and boasted an impressive ensemble featuring stars like Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis, backed by Hollywood heavyweight Lionsgate, it ultimately fell short in meeting expectations. Remarkably, Blanchett herself admitted to joining the project as a means of getting out of the house during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Regarding the Borderlands 4 video game, it will be released on September 12 across PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 platforms. However, if you’re a PlayStation user, you’ll have to wait until October for your version. For additional details about the global release times, take a look at the Borderlands 4 release schedule.
